MAURICE MORTLOCK SHOCKS LLANDUDNO WITH CHILD SEX OFFENSES AND TRAGIC DEATH

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the seaside town of Llandudno, an 80-year-old man named Maurice Mortlock was sentenced to prison after admitting to serious sexual offenses involving young girls. The crimes, which spanned over four decades, included the abuse of a girl who tragically died before he could be brought to justice.

Mortlock, a resident of Abbey Road in Llandudno, was found guilty of multiple charges related to his inappropriate conduct. The court heard that he had engaged in acts of gross indecency with a girl who was only nine years old at the time, between October 6, 1982, and October 5, 1983. Additionally, he confessed to assaulting another young girl during a period from February 1963 to February 1966.

The case came to light after the victim, who has since passed away, confided in her husband about the abuse. Her revelations were crucial in prompting an investigation that uncovered the disturbing history of Mortlock’s misconduct. The authorities received an anonymous letter that detailed allegations of abuse, prompting detectives to launch an inquiry. In March of the previous year, Mortlock was arrested and subsequently made frank admissions to the police, confirming his involvement in the offenses.

During the court proceedings, prosecutor Elen Owen revealed that the deceased woman had disclosed her abuse to her husband, which played a significant role in the case. The judge, Merfyn Hughes QC, expressed his views on the severity of Mortlock’s actions, emphasizing the lasting impact on the victims. He stated, “It’s impossible to judge the extent your conduct contributed to her unhappiness. But I have no doubt whatsoever it was a significant factor.”

Judge Hughes also criticized Mortlock’s attitude towards his crimes, noting that he minimized their seriousness and showed little empathy for his victims. The judge remarked, “It’s clear that you minimise the seriousness of your offending behaviour. You have very little victim empathy, suggesting the girl may have enjoyed what you were doing to her.”

In his sentencing, the judge ordered Mortlock to serve two years in prison. The defense, led by Simon Mintz, argued that Mortlock was ashamed and humiliated by his actions. Mr. Mintz urged the court to consider leniency, highlighting that a jail sentence would have a more profound impact on Mortlock than it would on a younger individual. He also expressed concern about the effect imprisonment would have on Mortlock’s wife, who relied on him.

Following the sentencing, the husband of the woman who had died spoke publicly, stating, “It’s right and fair he’s been jailed for what he’s done. I’m glad justice has been done for my wife at last. For years he’s behaved as if nothing had happened.” The case has left the community in shock, raising questions about the safety and oversight of individuals in positions of trust within the town of Llandudno.
