MAURICE MCCULLOUGH FROM WYTHENSHAWE SENTENCED FOR ONLINE GROOMING AND SEXUAL ABUSE OF 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In March 2015, Maurice McCullough, a 75-year-old resident of Wythenshawe, was handed a significant prison sentence after being convicted of serious crimes involving the grooming and sexual abuse of a young girl aged just 13. The case highlighted the dangers posed by online predators and underscored the importance of vigilance in protecting minors from exploitation.According to court reports, McCullough had initiated contact with the girl through social media platforms by falsely presenting himself as a 16-year-old boy. This deception was part of a calculated effort to gain her trust and facilitate a grooming process. Over a period of time, McCullough engaged in manipulative behavior, gradually encouraging the girl to engage in sexual acts.
The criminal activities culminated in sexual encounters that took place on four separate occasions. The first of these meetings occurred after the girl’s 13th birthday, with the pair meeting in a park in Wythenshawe. The encounters were only brought to an end when a member of the public grew suspicious of McCullough’s behavior and reported their concerns to the authorities.
Following the arrest, McCullough was charged with multiple offenses, including inciting sexual acts and grooming. During the court proceedings, he pleaded guilty to all charges, acknowledging his misconduct. His guilty plea and the evidence presented in court led to his conviction and subsequent sentencing.
In sentencing, the judge emphasized the gravity of McCullough’s actions and the impact on the young victim. As a result, he was sentenced to ten years in prison, a punishment deemed appropriate given the severity of the crimes committed.
This case has served as a stark reminder of the ongoing risks associated with online grooming and the importance of safeguarding children from predators who exploit digital platforms. It also highlights the critical role that members of the public can play in identifying and reporting suspicious behavior to prevent further harm.
