MATTHEW WATTS FROM KINGHAM ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SEXUAL ACTIVITY WITH 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a case that has shocked the community of Kingham, Matthew Watts, a resident of Orchard Way, was convicted of engaging in inappropriate sexual activity with a young girl aged just 13. Despite the gravity of the charges, Watts was spared immediate imprisonment, receiving a 12-month prison sentence that was subsequently suspended for two years by the presiding judge, Gordon Risius.According to court records, the incident in question took place in October 2011, when Watts, then 35 years old, was accused of indecently touching the minor. The victim, whose identity remains protected for legal reasons, confided in a school counsellor about the incident, prompting the matter to be reported to the police. Judge Risius noted that Watts attempted to downplay the event, claiming it was merely a “misunderstanding,” but the evidence and the victim’s account led to his conviction.
During the proceedings, Tony McGeorge, representing Watts, described the encounter as brief, lasting “somewhere between seconds and minutes.” He emphasized that this was a one-time incident and that there was no indication of similar behavior occurring before or after. McGeorge argued that the short duration of the act made it difficult to comprehend how it could have such a lasting and devastating impact on the victim.
Judge Risius, however, made it clear that Watts would be required to undertake a sex offenders’ rehabilitation program and would be subject to a sexual offences prevention order. The judge also expressed concern over Watts’s apparent lack of genuine remorse, stating that it was “difficult to detect any real remorse” for his actions.
In addition to the suspended sentence, the court commended the police officers involved in the case for their diligent work in bringing the matter to justice. The decision reflects the serious nature of the offense, but also highlights the judicial system’s approach to balancing punishment with rehabilitation in cases involving sexual misconduct.
