HAMPSHIRE BROTHERS BANNED AND FINED FOR HORSE CRUELTY
Two brothers, Matthew Twigg, aged 56, and David Twigg, aged 49, from Walworth Road in Andover, have been banned from owning or keeping horses for five years after admitting to causing unnecessary suffering to two ponies.
Matthew Twigg was also sentenced to five weeks in jail, suspended for 12 months, while David Twigg received 65 hours of unpaid work.
The court also ordered them to pay over £2,800 in costs.
The RSPCA reported that the two ponies, a 25-year-old grey Shetland named Merlin and a 15-year-old female grey Shetland named Hobby, had 'grossly overgrown hooves' and were unable to walk.
Both ponies had to be euthanized.
The RSPCA visited the property on 9 September 2013 after concerns were raised about the ponies.
Veterinarians and a farrier examined the animals and found them in such severe pain that they had to be put down.
RSPCA inspector Will Hendry stated: 'The situation for the ponies when we got to their stable was hopeless.
They had been suffering chronically for up to five years and yet nobody, either within the family or outside, thought to get them any help or pain relief.'
