REDCAR MAN JAILED FOR GROPING WOMAN AFTER DAY AT THE RACES
Sex offender Matthew Elsy, who forcibly groped a woman after a day at the races, has been sentenced to six months in jail. The court heard that Elsy engaged in unwanted sexual contact with a 27-year-old woman on a bus, following an evening of heavy drinking with friends at Redcar races and a promotional bar.
He began talking to her at the bus stop, and his conversation turned sexual.
Elsy then followed her onto the bus, where he sat behind her and continued making unwelcome sexual suggestions, including touching her thigh, squeezing her breast, and groping her bottom.
The victim reported feeling vulnerable and frightened afterward, especially when using public transport.
Judge Les Spittle remarked, "Young women should be able to go about their lawful business without the unwanted attentions of drunken louts," and condemned Elsy for ignoring her clear refusal.
Elsy, 20, from Egglestone Court, Skelton, East Cleveland, had a history of violence, having previously been jailed for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in 2006, for which he was released on licence but later broke the terms.
The court was told that Elsy shared 24 cans of lager with another man at Redcar races and continued drinking throughout the day.
His solicitor stated that Elsy was shocked and disgusted when shown CCTV footage of his actions and highlighted his work coaching children and individuals with special needs.
Elsy admitted to sexual touching, was convicted, and placed on the sex offenders’ register for five years.
