MATTHEW BANNER SENTENCED FOR ABUSE AT WHORLTON HALL
John Sanderson was caught on camera by Panorama threatening a man with violence.Ryan Fuller was convicted of instructing another male patient to lie on the floor to demonstrate a restraint technique, then mimicking an assault by pretending to perform an 'elbow drop' wrestling move from a chair.
Fuller was also found guilty of provoking another male patient and encouraging him to fight.
Judge Chris Smith sentenced the four carers at Teesside Crown Court on Friday.
Matthew Banner, aged 44 with no fixed address, received a four-month prison term, suspended for 18 months, after being convicted on five charges.
He was guilty of mistreating a patient by threatening to send men to her room and making repeated references to balloons, along with other abusive conduct.
The court was shown covert footage of him making threats and ridiculing a patient with communication difficulties.
Witness testimonies and the footage revealed that he mocked, taunted, and threatened vulnerable patients, some with complex needs who relied entirely on professional support.
This case was part of a larger abuse scandal at Whorlton Hall in County Durham, a facility closed in 2019 after a Panorama investigation uncovered widespread failures.
These incidents expose shocking neglect and cruelty by staff at a care home that was meant to protect the most vulnerable.
The sentences aim to hold the offenders accountable for their criminal conduct.
All four individuals received suspended sentences and community work, reflecting the court’s firm stance against such misconduct.
