ABUSER ATTACKED PARTNER AT HOSTEL
A man from Llanybydder, Ceredigion, was sentenced to three years in prison after being convicted of assaulting his girlfriend, including actual bodily harm and strangulation. The incident happened while the suspect, 34-year-old Mathew Williams, was staying at Maes Y Mor in Aberystwyth on October 14.
Court proceedings revealed that Williams had been drinking throughout the day and had behaved in a highly aggressive and degrading manner towards his partner.
Prosecutor Regan Walters detailed that Williams strangled his partner, grabbed a bottle and held it to her throat, poured alcohol on her, and threw a jug at her before friends intervened to restrain him.
The victim expressed feelings of fear, betrayal, and worthlessness in a statement read aloud during the trial.
Williams denied the charges but was convicted at Aberystwyth Magistrates’ Court on December 11, and his appeal was rejected.
It was noted that Williams had a lengthy criminal record with 45 convictions for 86 offences, including multiple acts of violence.
Defence lawyer Jon Tarrant acknowledged that rehabilitation appeared unlikely and highlighted Williams' issues with alcohol, which he would need to address in prison.
Judge Catherine Richards remarked on Williams’ intoxicated and obnoxious conduct during the incident, emphasizing the degrading nature of his actions towards his partner.
Additionally, Williams was ordered to stay away from his partner for five years via a restraining order.
