MARTIN SCOUGAL'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN AYTON AND EYEMOUTH: SIX MORE YEARS BEHIND BARS

In a disturbing series of sexual offenses spanning several years, Martin Scougal, a man originally from Ayton and with significant criminal activity in Eyemouth, has been sentenced to serve an additional six years in prison. His criminal history includes heinous acts committed against underage girls, with his latest sentencing reflecting the severity and persistence of his misconduct.

Scougal, who was previously incarcerated for four and a half years in 2012 for raping a young girl from the age of nine and molesting another girl around the age of eight, has a long history of sexual offenses. His initial crimes began when he was just 12 years old, starting with the abuse of one girl, and by the age of 14, he was engaging in sexual acts with her at a residence in Berwickshire. These early offenses marked the beginning of a pattern of predatory behavior that would continue into later years.

Earlier this year, at the High Court in Edinburgh, Scougal faced additional charges related to offenses that started in 2010. The court found him guilty of nine counts of sexual misconduct involving two young girls, including five counts of rape. The victims, both minors, were subjected to terrifying threats; one was told he would kill her, while the other was threatened with rape. The court heard that Scougal's actions were calculated and predatory, with Lady Wolffe describing his conduct as a deliberate pattern of sexual abuse.

The impact on the victims was profound. Lady Wolffe emphasized that the first girl had suffered from depression and panic attacks as a direct result of his abuse. She noted that after she became unavailable to him, Scougal quickly identified and targeted the second girl, who was equally young and vulnerable. The court detailed the extent of his misconduct, which included raping a 13-year-old girl in Berwickshire and a 14-year-old girl at a house in Peebles. The judge condemned his behavior, highlighting the devastating effects on the victims' mental health and well-being.

During the proceedings, it was revealed that Scougal, a former fish process worker, committed most of his recent offenses after being released on bail in 2010 at Duns Sheriff Court. A background report assessed him as posing a high risk to the community, and the judge made it clear that only a custodial sentence was appropriate given the gravity of his crimes.

In addition to his prison term, Scougal admitted to breaching a special bail condition that prohibited him from having unsupervised contact with children under 16. For this breach, he was sentenced to an extra nine months in prison. The court also ordered that he be placed under supervision for a further three and a half years to monitor his behavior and prevent further offenses.

His defense solicitor advocate, David Allan, acknowledged the seriousness of the crimes and emphasized that a prison sentence was inevitable. He also pointed out that Scougal had participated in a sex offender treatment program while incarcerated, expressing his client’s remorse and commitment to reducing the risk of reoffending. Despite these efforts, the court determined that the safety of the community necessitated a lengthy custodial sentence.

Following his convictions, Scougal was placed on the sex offenders’ register, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.
