BRADFORD MAN JAILED FOR SAVAGE ATTACK ON PARTNER
A woman who awoke in hospital under the impression she had been kidnapped and severely injured was in fact a victim of a violent assault by her partner. The incident occurred on September 11, when 50-year-old Martin Mitchell attacked her.
Bradford Crown Court heard that the couple had been together with a friend before separating while Mitchell went out drinking with friends.
He assaulted her upon her return home, although he claimed to have no memory of the attack.
The prosecutor, Alisha Kaye, explained that the woman was found by a friend on a mattress, naked and bloodied.
Mitchell later approached a neighbor stating he had beaten her and damaged the house, admitting he didn’t understand why he behaved that way but attributing his actions to being under the influence of drugs and alcohol, which caused him to black out.
When emergency services were called, Mitchell initially refused an ambulance and tried to clean the scene.
Paramedics then found her with serious injuries, including eight fractured ribs, a punctured and collapsed lung, injuries to her heart and large blood vessels, a wound to her right kidney, and possible bruises to her spleen.
She was taken to Leeds General Infirmary, requiring ventilator support, dialysis, and breathing tubes.
During her hospital stay, she expressed suicidal thoughts and felt she might never fully recover.
Mitchell was detained and questioned; he denied any knowledge of causing the injuries.
It was also noted that Mitchell had a previous conviction in 2014 for common assault.
He pleaded guilty earlier this year to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Mitchell was sentenced to over eight years in prison and ordered to stay away from his victim through a restraining order.
