MIDDLEWICH MAN ACQUITTED OF ATTEMPTED MURDER AFTER STABBING
A MIDDLEWICH man has been found not guilty after a trial of the attempted murder of his father.Previously, Chester Crown Court has heard how the 37-year-old stabbed his father, 67-year-old Douglas Mew, three times with a kitchen knife on March 9, 2025.
Prosecuting, John Philpotts said to a jury of eight men and four women he had been spotted taking medication out of the medication cabinet at their home address.
Mr Philpotts said: "The defendant was popping pills out onto a tray.
"Douglas Mew picked them up and poured them back into the box.
"As he turned away here was a thump in his back and as he turned back there was another thump in his shoulder.
"Douglas Mew said his son's face was in a frenzy." The victim had three significant stab wounds for which he was treated at the Royal Stoke University Hospital.
Mr Philpotts said Mew had had a significant amount of alcohol earlier in the evening including cider and wine.
It was the position of the prosecution he told his dad 'I am going to kill you'.
Mr Philpotts said he had held his dad responsible for 'all the wrongs in his life'.
The prosecutor said: "He was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm, however, as a police constable was walking him from the premises he said 'I hope he dies'.
"It was at that point he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder." Mew, of Warmingham Lane, has also been found not guilty of assault and intentional strangulation in relation to another, earlier incident involving a woman in January 2025.
After an adjournment for the preparation of the pre-sentence report he is up for sentencing in around six weeks' time for the incident involving his father in March 2025.
