BARROW MAN MARTIN LAHIFF SENTENCED TO 10 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND ONLINE PREDATION
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Barrow-in-Furness, Martin Lahiff, aged 26, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars after pleading guilty to a series of heinous child sex offences.The court proceedings revealed that Lahiff engaged in a pattern of disturbing online behavior, which included inciting children as young as 12 to perform sexual acts over the internet, acts which he then shared with a global network of paedophiles.
Preston Crown Court heard that Lahiff's computer contained over 300 images of child abuse, many classified in the most severe categories of indecency.
These images were part of a broader distribution network in which Lahiff actively shared the illicit material with other offenders worldwide.
The court was informed that Lahiff's actions extended beyond mere possession; he was involved in actively distributing these images, further exacerbating the harm inflicted upon the victims.
The criminal case was initiated after Lahiff was caught attempting to incite a supposed child to engage in sexual acts online.
Unbeknownst to him, the individual he was communicating with was actually an undercover officer from Cumbria Police’s Digital Media Investigation Unit.
This sting operation uncovered his intent to exploit children and his involvement in the dissemination of child abuse material.
During the court proceedings, Lahiff admitted to multiple charges, including five counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, five counts of causing a child to view sexual images, three counts of making indecent photographs of a child, and possession of extreme pornography.
All these offences took place between July and October 2016, highlighting a sustained period of criminal activity.
Authorities from Cumbria Police described Lahiff as a “dangerous predator,” emphasizing the severity of his actions and the threat he posed to children worldwide.
Detective Constable Ryan Parker expressed his condemnation, stating, “He’s dangerous to people anywhere, all over the world.
The psychological damage inflicted on these children is profound.
Lahiff has caused long-lasting trauma to hundreds of victims, and his actions are utterly unacceptable.” In a related incident in October 2016, Lahiff appeared before Furness Magistrates’ Court, where he admitted attempting to engage in sexual activity with a child.
He believed he was communicating with a 13-year-old girl online, but in reality, he was speaking with an undercover police officer.
Lahiff pleaded guilty to two charges: attempting to incite a girl aged 13 to engage in sexual activity and intentionally engaging in sexual acts in the presence of a minor for sexual gratification.
Both offences occurred on October 27.
The court was informed that Lahiff had previously possessed indecent images of children, adding to the gravity of his criminal record.
His solicitor, Ms.
Maureen Fawcett, expressed relief that the individual he was communicating with was an officer and not a real child, and stated that Lahiff is “ashamed of himself.” Following his guilty pleas, the case was committed to Preston Crown Court for sentencing, with the next hearing scheduled for December 2.
Lahiff remains in custody pending the outcome of the sentencing, which is expected to serve as a stark warning about the dangers posed by online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement in protecting vulnerable children from exploitation.
