MAN SENTENCED FOR ATTEMPTING TO MEET GIRLS FOR SEX
In a disturbing case that highlights the ongoing dangers of online grooming, Martin Garrigan, a 32-year-old man from Barton Road, Bognor, West Sussex, has been handed a substantial prison sentence after attempting to arrange a meeting with what he believed were two young girls for sexual purposes.The incident unfolded in September 2020 when Sussex Police officers detained Garrigan in Hotham Park, a popular recreational area near his residence.
Prior to his arrest, Garrigan had been engaged in online conversations with individuals he thought were underage girls.
However, these interactions were actually with adults posing as children.
It was during these exchanges that Garrigan expressed intentions to meet the supposed minors for sexual activities, a plan that was ultimately thwarted by vigilant members of the public and law enforcement efforts.
Garrigan appeared before Lewes Crown Court on June 30, where he openly pleaded guilty to charges of attempted sexual communication with minors.
His plea confirmed his intent to engage in illicit activities involving children, raising serious concerns about online safety and the protection of vulnerable youths.
As a result of his conviction, Garrigan was sentenced to four years in prison.
Additionally, the court ordered that he be subject to lifelong registration as a sex offender, a move designed to monitor and restrict his interactions, especially those involving children.
Among the protective measures imposed was a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which has been in place indefinitely.
This order enforces strict limitations on Garrigan’s access to digital devices and communications to prevent any further attempts to offend.
Detective Constable Jordan Holmes of Sussex Police commented on the case, emphasising the severity and the potential danger Garrigan posed.
He stated, “Garrigan was blatantly seeking to meet young girls for sex and may well have persisted in this and other ways, but fortunately, we received information from members of the public, and his activities were rapidly ended.” This case underscores the importance of community vigilance and effective law enforcement in combating online grooming and safeguarding children from exploitation.
Authorities continue to urge the public to report any suspicious activity and to remain vigilant against predators like Garrigan who attempt to abuse the trust of innocent minors.
