MARTIN BROWN OF WAVERTREE SENTENCED FOR ASSAULTS ON GIRLS AT MERSEYSIDE AFTER-SCHOOL CLUB

In August 2003, a disturbing case emerged involving Martin Brown, a man from Royston Street in Wavertree, who was found guilty of indecently assaulting three young girls during his time volunteering at an after-school club in Merseyside. The incidents, which took place over a period of time, have shocked the local community and highlighted serious concerns about the safety and supervision of children in such environments.

Brown, aged 25 at the time of sentencing, was convicted in Liverpool Crown Court of four separate counts of indecent assault involving the girls, who were aged six, ten, and thirteen. The court heard that Brown’s actions were particularly egregious given his role as a helper at the club, a position that carried a significant responsibility for the well-being and safety of the children under his care.

One of the most troubling aspects of the case involved a 13-year-old girl who attended the club in June 2002. She confided in her mother that Brown had touched her breast three times over the course of four days. Her mother promptly reported the incident to the police and social services, leading to further investigations. During these inquiries, two additional girls were interviewed and revealed that Brown had also inappropriately touched them, raising serious concerns about his conduct and the potential for further harm.

Despite the evidence, Brown denied the allegations, and the jury acquitted him of two additional charges of indecent assault against the 13-year-old girl. Nevertheless, the court found sufficient evidence to convict him on four counts of indecent assault, which resulted in a significant prison sentence.

Judge John Phipps, presiding over the case, delivered a stern judgment, emphasizing the breach of trust involved in the offenses. He stated, “You were in a position of trust and responsibility towards these girls and these convictions represent a gross breach of trust.” The judge also described Brown as “dangerous to young girls,” underscoring the potential risk he posed to the community.

As part of his sentence, Brown was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. Furthermore, the judge imposed lifelong restrictions on his ability to work with children, banning him from such roles indefinitely. He was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for an indefinite period and on license for three years following his release, measures intended to monitor and prevent any future offenses. The case has left many in Wavertree and the wider Merseyside area deeply concerned about safeguarding children and the importance of vigilance in community activities involving minors.
