In 2021, a man broke into a woman's residence by forcing his way through her bedroom window and assaulted her sexually while she was unconscious.
Mark Winterburn, age 33, was found guilty after a trial and received a 14-year prison sentence, in addition to a five-year extended license.
Court proceedings revealed that Winterburn, who had prior convictions for residential burglary and was on prison licence at the time of the offence, left the victim feeling both vulnerable and dirtied.
The judge described the incident as "a dreadful event." His legal representative pointed out that Winterburn had led a solitary and dissolute existence, marked by longstanding drug dependency, and characterized the assault as impulsive, drunken, and chaotic.
He was also required to register as a sex offender for life.
