MARK WALKER FROM LEIGH JAILED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES AND ONLINE PERVERTED FANTASIES

In a case that has shocked the local community of Leigh, 26-year-old Mark Walker was sentenced to prison after being found guilty of possessing and distributing indecent images of children, as well as engaging in disturbing online conversations involving graphic sexual fantasies about minors.

Walker, who resided in Southernhay, Leigh, was arrested in November 2011 following intelligence reports indicating his involvement in the distribution of child abuse images. Authorities seized his computer, which contained a staggering total of 1,376 indecent images of children, including 91 at the most severe level five, and 404 at level four. Additionally, six videos depicting child abuse were recovered from his device.

Further investigation revealed that Walker had shared these images via Skype, with chat logs indicating he had exchanged material up to and including level five content with others. The court heard that Walker had become deeply entangled in a dark online community, often discussing and sharing graphic fantasies involving gang rapes of young children and babies.

During the proceedings, the court was shown extracts from chat logs that detailed these disturbing conversations. The content was so distressing that the court's reporting restrictions prevented the publication of certain details, including the words of the victims involved. Walker’s parents were visibly upset as these extracts were read aloud, with some members of the court staff choosing not to publish the most graphic parts of the evidence.

Defence lawyer Allan Compton argued that Walker’s actions stemmed from a troubled past, explaining that he had turned to the internet as a refuge from bullying. Compton described Walker as having created a 'fantasy world' to escape the physical and emotional abuse he endured for being gay. He stated, “There were times in his early teenage years, struggling as he was, that he would resort to being in his room on his computer.”

Compton further explained that Walker, who was living in Rochford at the time of the offences, initially stumbled upon indecent images online out of curiosity. He claimed this curiosity quickly turned into an addiction, which he described as a form of being 'corrupted' by what he had seen. The lawyer emphasized that Walker led a seemingly normal life outside his online activities, holding a job at Homebase for nine years and attempting to take positive steps toward overcoming his addiction.

Despite these arguments, the court was guided by sentencing guidelines that indicated a starting point of two years in prison for distributing level five images. Judge Lodge stated that he could not accept the defence’s assertion that Walker’s offending was confined to his bedroom and that sharing fantasies with others did not mitigate the seriousness of his actions. The judge emphasized the gravity of the crimes, noting that the online material involved some of the most graphic and disturbing content.

Ultimately, Walker was sentenced to 16 months in prison for distributing the images. Additionally, he received three concurrent sentences of eight months each for possessing and creating indecent images. As Walker’s mother left the court, she was supported by relatives, visibly distressed by the outcome. The sentence reflects the court’s firm stance on such offences, underscoring the severity of online child exploitation and the importance of holding offenders accountable.
