EX-MET OFFICER FROM SAME ELITE UNIT AS CARRICK AND COUZENS CHARGED WITH MULTIPLE RAPES
A former Metropolitan police officer who served in the same elite unit as David Carrick and Wayne Couzens has been formally charged with a series of serious offences, including rape and sexual assault.Mark Tyrrell, aged 55, was part of the parliamentary and diplomatic protection command, a unit responsible for guarding diplomatic buildings and parliamentary sites across London.
He is accused of committing 21 offences over a period spanning six years, which involve two counts of rape, 15 counts of sexual assault, four counts of sexual assault by penetration, three counts of perverting the course of justice, and one count of misconduct in public office.
Tyrrell was a serving officer when the allegations first came to light but retired last year during the ongoing criminal investigation.
The charges relate to a single female victim he allegedly met through his duties as a police officer.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) indicated that the offences occurred between 2017 and 2023.
The investigation claimed that Tyrrell knew the woman was vulnerable when he entered a relationship with her.
The charges include misconduct in public office for allegedly engaging in an inappropriate relationship and for attempting to cover up his actions by deleting messages, pressuring the woman to give false accounts, and lying during interviews.
Tyrrell's connection to the same elite unit as Carrick and Couzens, both notorious for serious crimes (Carrick was given 36 life sentences for multiple rapes and a murder, while Couzens received a life sentence for the murder of Sarah Everard), has raised concerns.
Scotland Yard has stated that Tyrrell did not work with Carrick or Couzens and there is no evidence they knew each other.
Tyrrell was arrested in April 2023 while still a serving officer and subsequently retired on September 8, 2023.
The case highlights ongoing issues within the police force regarding misconduct and serious criminal behaviour.
