MARK ROGERS FROM HOO SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ABUSE IN MAIDSTONE

In a case that has shocked the local community of Hoo, Mark Rogers, aged 45, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 12 years after admitting to serious sexual offenses involving both a woman and a young boy. The court proceedings revealed disturbing details about Rogers' actions, which have left lasting scars on his victims.

Rogers, who resides on Robson Drive in Hoo, pleaded guilty to two counts of rape involving a woman and also admitted to indecent assault, indecency with a child, and sexual assault concerning the boy. Despite his admissions, he denied five additional charges, including two counts of rape, sexual activity with a child, indecency with a boy, and further indecent assaults on a woman. These allegations remain on the court record, pending further legal considerations.

The presiding judge, Judge Martin Joy, addressed Rogers directly during the sentencing, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes. He stated, "These are extremely serious offences and have caused enormous distress and long-term damage. Anyone hearing the facts of this case can only sympathize with your victims for the suffering they have endured."

Prosecutor Andrew Collings provided a detailed account of the abuse, highlighting the disturbing nature of Rogers' conduct. He explained that Rogers began abusing the young boy by encouraging him to perform sexual acts, gradually escalating the abuse and falsely claiming that such acts were "quite normal." Collings emphasized the profound psychological impact on the victim, stating, "He has suffered tremendously psychologically."

Regarding the assault on the woman, Collings recounted that Rogers restrained her by tying her hands behind her back and forced her to perform a sexual act. The woman later recounted to police that Rogers appeared very angry during the incident. During the rape, Rogers threatened her with death, saying, "If you scream, I will kill you," before subsequently apologizing afterward.

Defense lawyer Michael Haynes argued that Rogers was suffering from mental health issues at the time of the offenses. He claimed that Rogers believed his actions were consensual, citing his medication and history of mental health struggles, including multiple suicide attempts. Haynes also mentioned that Rogers had been abused himself as a young person, which he suggested might have contributed to his inability to empathize with others.

Judge Joy condemned Rogers' conduct, describing it as creating an environment of intimidation and dread. He remarked, "This course of conduct created an atmosphere of intimidation and dread. It is impossible to assess the psychological damage you have caused to others. These offences were committed against a background of force, aggression, and threats. They represent a horrifying course of conduct."

As part of his sentence, Rogers' name will be entered onto the sex offenders' register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions. The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Hoo and underscores the importance of justice for victims of such heinous crimes.
