MARK OVERSBY STALKING AND VIOLENCE IN ST AUSTELL AND REDRUTH
In a recent series of criminal proceedings, Mark Oversby, aged 34 and residing in St Austell, has faced multiple serious charges that highlight a pattern of disturbing behavior and violent conduct. The case was brought before Truro Crown Court, where Oversby was charged with a sexual assault that occurred in Wadebridge on the 27th of November. During the court proceedings, he pleaded guilty not only to the assault but also to a failure to comply with legal notification requirements concerning his status as a sex offender.Specifically, Oversby admitted to neglecting to inform the police within three days of his release from custody on the 17th of November, a breach of the obligations set out in the Sex Offenders’ Register. As a result, he was remanded into custody, and his case was scheduled for further hearing on the 7th of January.
Prior to these incidents, Oversby engaged in a disturbing pattern of stalking behavior directed at a woman living in Penzance. Between June 17 and June 25, he persistently pursued her, engaging in a series of unsettling actions that caused significant distress. His conduct included sending numerous messages to the woman, showing up unannounced at her residence, loitering around her property, and even sleeping in her garden without her consent. These actions demonstrated a clear course of harassment that severely impacted her sense of safety and well-being.
Adding to his criminal record, on December 3, 2021, Oversby was involved in an assault in Redruth, where he attacked both a man and a woman. The details of this assault were part of the evidence considered during his sentencing, highlighting a pattern of violent behavior.
Further complicating his legal issues, on March 3, 2022, Oversby failed to surrender himself to authorities after being released on bail in connection with other criminal proceedings. Despite being required to appear at Truro Magistrates' Court, he did not do so without any reasonable cause or justification, which led to additional charges of failing to surrender.
During the sentencing hearing, the court emphasized the gravity of Oversby’s offenses. The judge noted that his persistent stalking, which had a serious and tangible impact on the victim, combined with violent assaults and his failure to surrender, left no alternative but to impose custodial sentences. Oversby was sentenced to 15 weeks in prison. Additionally, a restraining order was issued, prohibiting him from contacting the woman he stalked and from entering the road where she resides.
As part of his penalties, Oversby was ordered to pay a surcharge of £128 to fund victim services and £85 in costs to the Crown Prosecution Service. The court’s decision underscored the seriousness of his actions, reflecting the need to protect victims and uphold the law in cases involving stalking, violence, and non-compliance with court orders.
