MARK MCKENNA FROM NORTHFLEET CAUGHT IN SHOCKING CHILD SEX PLOT AT BLUEWATER SHOPPING CENTRE

In August 2016, Mark McKenna, a 38-year-old resident of Northfleet, was caught in a disturbing online grooming operation that culminated in his arrest outside the Bluewater shopping mall near Dartford, Kent. The incident was orchestrated by a vigilante group known as The Hunted One, which specializes in exposing individuals attempting to engage in illegal activities with minors.

McKenna was apprehended in an open-air car park adjacent to the shopping complex, where he had arrived with the apparent intention of meeting what he believed was an 11-year-old girl named 'Lisa' for sexual purposes. The confrontation was recorded by the group and later shared on social media, drawing widespread attention to the case. During the encounter, McKenna was filmed being questioned about the explicit online conversations he had been having with the fictitious girl, which he believed was real.

Prosecutor Dominic Connolly detailed the extent of McKenna’s predatory behavior, revealing that he had engaged in over three weeks of online messaging with the fake profile. McKenna had expressed a desire to touch, kiss, and engage in sexual activity with the girl, explicitly stating he was 'hard' and wanted her to touch his private areas. He also indicated that he did not want to have sex 'yet,' but was preparing for the encounter by purchasing condoms, which he later showed to the group via a photograph of an unopened packet.

Further evidence presented in court showed that McKenna had private messaged the fake 'Lisa' after liking her profile on Instagram, which was set up by the vigilante group. His messages included explicit images of himself and a penis, as well as sexually suggestive comments about having 'nice dreams about us.' He also sent diagrams illustrating sexual positions and discussed the need for caution and protection during their planned meeting.

It was revealed that McKenna was aware from the outset that the girl was not real, as he had seen her photographs and asked her directly about her age. He even told her that she would need to pretend to be his daughter when they met. The planned meeting was scheduled for August 6 at Bluewater, but he was met by the vigilantes before he could carry out his intentions. The confrontation was intense, with McKenna acknowledging he had expected to be caught and admitting to sending numerous explicit images and a masturbation video.

During the arrest, police officers arrived at the scene, and McKenna was taken into custody. He subsequently pleaded guilty to one count of arranging or facilitating a child sex offence, specifically engaging in sexual activity with a child, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. The court heard that his actions had already caused significant personal consequences, including the end of his relationship, loss of employment at a local cement works, and threats from the public in the form of hate mail and death threats.

Judge Philip Statman addressed the court, condemning McKenna’s actions as 'abhorrent and appalling.' He emphasized that McKenna’s grooming behavior and explicit communications demonstrated a clear intent to have full sexual intercourse with the fictitious 'Lisa,' which he believed to be an 11-year-old girl. The judge pointed out that although the child was not real, the psychological and physical harm such activities could cause to a real child would be severe. He also noted that McKenna’s conduct was premeditated and involved significant planning, targeting a vulnerable individual for his own sick gratification.

While a probation report classified McKenna as a medium risk of reoffending, the judge highlighted that he had a long way to go in understanding the gravity of his actions. The court underscored the importance of protecting children from such predators, even when the victim is a fictitious persona created by vigilantes. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by online grooming and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding minors from exploitation.
