MARK BENNETT FROM HIGHBRIDGE CONVICTED OF SEX CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN IN TAUNTON

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Highbridge and the surrounding areas, Mark Bennett, a taxi driver residing on Burnham Road in Highbridge, has been found guilty of a series of heinous sexual offenses committed over a span of 15 years. The convictions were handed down this week at Taunton Crown Court, where a jury deliberated and ultimately convicted Bennett on multiple counts, including one charge of rape, four counts of indecent assault, two counts of indecency with a child, two counts of sexual assault, and one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.

Prosecutor Ian Dixey detailed the disturbing nature of the crimes, revealing that the offenses took place between 1991 and 2006 and involved four young girls aged between seven and 15. He explained to the court that Bennett’s approach was not characterized by threats or intimidation; instead, he exploited the trust and innocence of his victims through acts of kindness and sympathy. Bennett would often buy clothes and jewelry for the girls and maintain frequent contact by calling them several times a week, fostering a false sense of affection and trust.

Mr. Dixey emphasized that Bennett’s manipulative tactics led to genuine emotional bonds with his victims, with one girl even sending him love letters. The prosecutor made it clear that Bennett’s sexual attraction was rooted in his status as a paedophile, targeting underage girls for his own gratification.

The arrest of Bennett followed a complaint from one of the victims. Her mother took the initiative to seize clothing belonging to her daughter for forensic testing, which ultimately linked Bennett to the crime scene with an astonishing probability of a billion to one. Despite the mounting evidence, Bennett maintained his innocence and chose not to testify during the trial.

During the proceedings, a victim recounted how Bennett had first kissed her during a taxi ride in West Somerset, before repeatedly calling her and arranging meetings. The most disturbing revelation was that their sexual encounter occurred when she was just 11 years old. Prosecutor Ian Dixey pointed out that Bennett’s decision not to take the stand was likely because he had no credible defense against the allegations, stating, “There is nothing in this case to challenge her on that (the victim’s account).”

Defense lawyer Alan Large argued that there were “considerable inconsistencies” in the victims’ testimonies and claimed there was no substantial evidence to support the allegations of rape. He also disclosed that a second complainant had admitted to fabricating some of her claims. Nevertheless, the jury found Bennett guilty of all charges, delivering a verdict that underscores the severity of his crimes and the betrayal of trust involved.
