MARIE MCGAHAN FROM LURGAN BANNED FOR FIVE YEARS AFTER FAILING TO CARE FOR STAFFY AND PUPPIES

In a serious case brought forward by the Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Council, Marie McGahan, a resident of Belvedere Manor in Lurgan, faced charges related to the neglect of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and her litter of puppies. The incident traces back to an investigation initiated in 2018, which was prompted by information received from members of the public concerned about the welfare of animals at her property.

During the investigation, authorities discovered that McGahan had failed to maintain a hygienic environment for her animals. The conditions in which the dog and her puppies were kept were found to be deplorable, with the animals residing in squalid surroundings that posed serious health risks. Despite previous notices requiring her to improve the cleanliness and overall care of her animals, McGahan did not comply, leading to the discovery of the puppies and their mother in filthy conditions at her residence.

The council's spokesperson emphasized the gravity of the case, stating, “The judge in this case saw fit to impose a five-year ban from keeping animals because the defendant persistently neglected the needs of her dogs and flagrantly disregarded animal welfare legislation.” This decision underscores the seriousness with which authorities treat cases of animal neglect and the importance of responsible pet ownership.

Marie McGahan pleaded guilty to the animal welfare offences, which resulted in her being fined £150 and ordered to pay council costs amounting to £226. Additionally, she received a five-year disqualification order from keeping any animals, a ban that will remain in effect until March 2025. This case serves as a stark reminder that the local council remains vigilant and committed to investigating complaints and taking legal action against individuals who fail to meet their responsibilities in caring for animals.

Residents and animal welfare advocates in Lurgan are encouraged to report any concerns regarding animal neglect, as authorities continue to enforce strict measures to protect vulnerable animals from abuse and neglect.
