HARROGATE COMPUTER CONSULTANT MALCOLM MCKEATING SENTENCED FOR CHILD INDECENT IMAGES

In a case that has drawn significant attention from law enforcement and the local community in Harrogate, Malcolm McKeating, a 67-year-old computer security consultant, was convicted following a detailed and complex police investigation into the possession and creation of indecent images of children. The proceedings took place at York Crown Court, where the evidence presented painted a troubling picture of the defendant's activities spanning nearly a decade.

McKeating was found guilty of producing indecent photographs classified as category B and C, with the offenses occurring between May 2007 and February 2016. The court heard that these images were stored on his personal computer hardware, which was seized during a police raid in February 2016. The arrest was initially made on suspicion of possessing indecent material, and McKeating was subsequently released on bail while authorities continued their investigation.

The investigation proved to be particularly challenging due to the nature of the seized computer equipment. Much of the hardware was encrypted, necessitating extensive forensic analysis by specialists to access the data. Additionally, some files and information had been deliberately deleted, which required the use of advanced forensic software to recover. Despite McKeating’s claims during police interviews that his machines might have been remotely accessed or infected by a virus, investigators found no supporting evidence to substantiate these assertions.

Throughout the trial, the court was presented with the evidence of the digital files, which confirmed the possession and creation of illegal images. The defendant, who is self-employed in the field of computer security, faced the reality of his actions being scrutinized under the law. The judge, Paul Worsley QC, delivered the verdict and sentencing, which included a four-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. This means McKeating will not serve time unless he commits another offense within the suspension period.

In addition to the suspended sentence, Judge Worsley imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order lasting seven years, restricting McKeating’s activities and contact to prevent any future harm. During sentencing, the judge expressed concern that McKeating had been offending over a prolonged period and appeared to be in denial about his actions. The judge remarked, “You are clearly in denial and have clearly not been able to admit it to your wife and family.”

Furthermore, McKeating was ordered to pay prosecution costs and is required to register as a sex offender, a measure that will have lasting implications for his personal and professional life. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of illegal images of children, and it highlights the importance of thorough forensic investigation in such complex cases.
