MALCOLM FORD OF SOUTHPORT AND TAMESIDE JAILED FOR HISTORIC SEXUAL ABUSE IN GREATER MANCHESTER

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local communities of Southport and Tameside, Malcolm Ford, a 66-year-old man, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being convicted of serious sexual offenses committed over two decades ago. The offences involved the rape of an underage girl, as well as indecent assaults on two other teenage girls, all of which took place more than 20 years prior to his conviction.

Malcolm Ford, who resided on Bell Street in Southport at the time of his arrest, held a prominent position in the educational sector. He was serving as the head teacher at a school located within the Tameside area of Greater Manchester during the period when the crimes were committed. His influence extended beyond the school, as he also served as an ex-chairman of the board of governors at Edge Hill College, now known as Edge Hill University. Ford maintained this role for 16 years until his departure in 1997, which added to his standing within the community and the educational establishment.

The court proceedings revealed that Ford’s misconduct was not an isolated incident. He admitted to engaging in similar indecent assaults against two other teenage girls, further highlighting the pattern of his abusive behavior. The conviction and subsequent sentencing were the result of a thorough investigation by law enforcement authorities, who emphasized the importance of justice for victims of historic abuse.

Judge Adrian Smith, presiding over the case at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, emphasized the gravity of Ford’s actions and the impact on his victims. In his sentencing remarks, the judge acknowledged Ford’s involvement in “local child safeguard protection,” a role that starkly contrasted with his criminal conduct. The judge also noted that the victim had hesitated to come forward initially, citing Ford’s respected position in the community and his 29-year career in teaching as reasons for her silence. It was only in recent times that she felt able to speak out and seek justice.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Jayne Mckie expressed her admiration for the victim’s bravery. She stated, “This conviction would not have been possible without the determination of the victim, who has shown tremendous courage throughout proceedings. I hope that today’s outcome can help her now find the strength to move on.” She also underscored the commitment of Greater Manchester Police’s public protection division, which employs specially trained officers dedicated to supporting victims throughout the justice process.

Mckie further conveyed a message to other victims of historic sexual abuse, emphasizing that “it is never too late for you to come forward.” The case serves as a stark reminder that justice can be pursued regardless of how much time has passed since the offenses occurred, and that law enforcement remains committed to holding offenders accountable, no matter how long ago the crimes took place.
