MALCOLM BURWOOD OF DURHAM DIES BEHIND BARS AFTER HORRIFIC SEX OFFENSES ON YOUNG BOY
Malcolm Burwood, a man with a dark history of sexual abuse, has passed away while serving his prison sentence. The former soldier from Durham was convicted of heinous crimes involving a young boy, whose life was profoundly affected by the abuse.
Burwood's victim, a young child at the time, endured terrifying and traumatic sexual assaults at the hands of Burwood, who was known to the boy as a figure of authority and trust.
The young victim was described as frightened and vulnerable, and the abuse inflicted upon him left deep psychological scars.
The court heard that Burwood threatened the boy to silence him, ensuring that the abuse remained hidden for years.
The trauma was so severe that the victim later attempted to take his own life, haunted by memories of the assaults.
In March 2019, after a lengthy investigation and trial, Malcolm Burwood was sentenced to 12 years in prison for four separate sex offenses.
The court also mandated that he register as a sex offender for life, a measure intended to protect the community from further harm.
During the sentencing hearing at Newcastle Crown Court, the victim bravely addressed the court, stating, "I clearly remember being a very frightened child.
This has haunted me, it has blighted my life." He further expressed the emotional toll, saying, "I have felt there is no hope or future.
It is like a storm inside of me." At the time of his incarceration, Burwood was 79 years old and was reported to have multiple serious health issues, including obstructive airways disease, renal failure, and hearing loss.
His wife was also seriously ill and hospitalized, adding to the complexity of his circumstances.
The judge overseeing his case acknowledged that Burwood's age and health would make prison life particularly challenging for him, but emphasized that had he reported his crimes earlier, he might have served his sentence when he was younger and more able to endure it.
Recent reports from the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman confirmed that Malcolm Burwood died of prostate cancer on April 7, 2024.
An inquest held on May 30 concluded that his death was due to natural causes, bringing an end to a life marked by both service and profound tragedy.
