BOGNOR CARE HOME DEPUTY MANAGER JAILED FOR ABUSING RESIDENTS
A deputy manager at Summerley Care Home in Bognor, Madelynne Rawle, has been jailed for her actions involving the abuse of vulnerable residents. She admitted to two counts of ill-treating and wilfully neglecting residents without capacity under the Mental Capacity Act 2005, and was later found guilty of the same offences against five more residents, though she was acquitted of one.
Rawle received a 30-month prison sentence at Portsmouth Crown Court.
The offences, which occurred in 2018 while she was working at the home, included slapping, pulling hair, spitting, sitting on residents, and verbal abuse.
Her victims, all of whom required constant support, included seven individuals—six women and one man—five of whom have since died for unrelated reasons.
The police investigation was initiated after staff at the home raised concerns following a change in management.
Detective Constable Sarah Lallament noted that Rawle abused her victims over many months, emphasizing the vulnerability of the residents and the expectation of good standard care that was not met in this case.
