LUCY HAMBLEY PLEADS GUILTY TO SEXUAL ABUSE OF SCHOOLBOY IN ST AUSTELL
In May 2022, a disturbing case emerged from St Austell involving Lucy Jayne Hambley, a 40-year-old woman whose actions have left a profound impact on a young boy.Hambley, residing in Mount Charles, initially denied any involvement when questioned by police but later admitted to four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a 13-year-old boy.
Her plea came during proceedings at Truro Crown Court in Cornwall, where the details of her misconduct were laid bare.
According to court reports, Hambley initially sought to establish a friendship with the young boy, attempting to build trust and rapport.
However, her intentions took a sinister turn when the boy expressed uncertainty about his sexuality, suggesting he might be gay.
In response, Hambley allegedly told him, “I am going to prove you are not gay,” before leading him into a bedroom.
This statement marked the beginning of a series of abusive acts that would span over nine months, from 2018 to 2019.
Prosecutor Heather Hope detailed how Hambley encouraged the boy to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes, actions that were part of her grooming process.
She then began kissing him, despite the boy’s protests, which she ignored.
The court heard that Hambley did not use a condom during their encounters and repeatedly professed her love for him, even claiming she wanted to get pregnant by him.
It was revealed that prior to these incidents, the boy was a virgin and had never engaged in sexual activity before.
The abuse was not limited to physical acts; Hambley also sent the boy explicit photographs of herself.
She claimed to have shared these images with other users on dating websites, further complicating the case.
An alarming incident was reported when a neighbor, concerned about the unusual behavior, knocked on Hambley’s door to find both her and the boy in dressing gowns, with love bites visible on their necks.
This neighbor chose to report the situation anonymously to Childline, highlighting the community’s concern.
The young victim, who initially lacked the courage to disclose the abuse, eventually confided in his mother and a social worker.
He described feeling destroyed by the experience, stating, “I don’t see myself ever being happy again.
It has destroyed me.
I have changed everything about myself, and nothing for the better.
I have self-harmed and go weeks without sleep.
I took overdoses with the intention to take my own life.” Hambley’s arrest followed, and although she initially denied any wrongdoing, forensic analysis of her bedding revealed semen matching the DNA of the boy.
This evidence was pivotal in establishing her guilt.
During her trial, the court heard her victim statement, which painted a bleak picture of the boy’s mental health struggles and the profound impact of her actions.
Judge Anna Richardson addressed the court, condemning Hambley’s grooming of the young boy as a deeply unsettling breach of trust.
She emphasized the manipulation involved, stating, “There is very distorted thinking, that he had all the control and manipulated you.
You were the adult in this situation.” Hambley was ultimately sentenced to seven and a half years in prison.
The court ordered that she serve at least two-thirds of her sentence before being considered for parole.
Additionally, she will be required to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the severity of her crimes and the lasting impact on her young victim.
