SHELDON TURNER AND LUCY BLACKMORE'S CRUELTY IN BRIDGWATER: DOG WITH UNEXPLAINED INJURIES LEFT TO SUFFER

In a disturbing case of animal neglect and abuse, Sheldon Turner and Lucy Blackmore, both residents of Bridgwater, have been convicted for their failure to seek medical treatment for their French bulldog, Pepsi, who suffered from multiple unexplained injuries. The incident came to light on December 13, 2023, when police officers responded to concerns raised about the welfare of the dog at Blackmore's residence in Warren Close.

Police arrived at the property after receiving reports that Pepsi was in a dire state, prompting an urgent investigation. Upon arrival, officers discovered the small dog confined within a rectangular plastic container located in the backyard. The container's lid was securely fastened with a heavy hose pipe placed on top, preventing any escape. Police carefully lifted the lid and found Pepsi inside, visibly terrified and in a state of distress. The dog exhibited facial injuries that were bleeding, along with signs of neglect and untreated health issues.

It was evident that Pepsi had been in the container for some time, as the police noted that the weight of the hose pipe made it impossible for her to have escaped on her own. The dog had only been in the care of Blackmore and Turner for approximately six weeks, yet during this period, her condition had deteriorated significantly. She was immediately taken to a veterinary clinic for urgent treatment. The vet diagnosed her with a broken leg, which unfortunately was so severely damaged that it had to be amputated. In addition to the broken limb, Pepsi was found to have multiple grazes, bruises, and a 3cm cut on her face. She also suffered from inflamed feet, and issues with her eyes and ears.

The veterinarian's examination revealed that the bruising, grazes, and lacerations were consistent with blunt force trauma, with some injuries dating back between four and twenty-four hours, and the fractured leg likely occurring two to six weeks prior. The ear and eye problems appeared to have been ongoing for a longer period, resulting in scarring and partial vision loss due to dry eye conditions. These findings indicated a pattern of sustained abuse and neglect.

Deputy Chief Inspector Simon Coombs of the RSPCA expressed his concern over the case, stating, “Despite being aware of Pepsi’s health issues, they didn’t seek medical help for her, and if it wasn’t for police and RSPCA intervention, her suffering would have continued—since she arrived at their care, she had been neglected and left untreated for six weeks.” He emphasized the importance of responsible pet ownership, adding, “Owning a dog like Pepsi is a privilege, and it is heartbreaking to think of what she endured. Dogs are capable of feeling pain and suffering just like humans, and they deserve kindness and compassion. If any pet owner is struggling to care for their animals, they should reach out to local charities or organizations for help. No animal should have to suffer in silence.”

Following her rescue, Pepsi was cared for at the RSPCA Brent Knoll Animal Centre, where she received extensive treatment and love from the staff at the North Somerset Branch rescue centre. The team dedicated themselves to her recovery, ensuring she received the care and attention needed to heal physically and emotionally. As she recuperates, efforts are underway to find her a loving new home where she can be safe and cherished.

In addition to Pepsi’s case, two other dogs under Turner’s care are now available for rehoming, highlighting the ongoing concern over his treatment of animals. Turner and Blackmore have both been sentenced for their roles in this case. Turner received an 18-month community order, which includes 30 days of rehabilitation, along with fines totaling £80, a £114 surcharge, and £400 in costs. Blackmore was fined £200, with an additional £160 victim surcharge and £400 costs. Both individuals are banned from owning animals for ten years, although they have the right to appeal after five years, with the ban set to expire in November 2034.

It is noteworthy that Sheldon Turner’s troubled history dates back to 2011, when local newspaper the Bridgwater Mercury reported on his “tragic plight.” At that time, Turner was homeless and struggling to find stable accommodation. Born with a brain bruise, he was said to have the mental capacity of a seven-year-old. His difficulties were compounded by repeated thefts from his mother, Susan Turner, which led to his homelessness. Turner described his situation to the Mercury, saying, “I struggle to eat and have stolen before. My mum won’t have me back because I used to steal from her. The police can arrest me, but how do you expect me to live? I have the choice to either die or survive.”

Turner, who has been diagnosed with autism, Tourette’s syndrome, and ADHD, was placed into care as a child. His mother, Susan, recounted that he had become violent and that she had no choice but to throw him out. She also revealed that he is a self-harmer with suicidal tendencies. She added, “A mother’s love doesn’t change no matter what, but when he was at home, I was on edge all the time.”

According to a spokesperson for Sedgemoor District Council, Turner was registered with the local authority and had previously been a tenant. However, he vacated his residence after being convicted of criminal damage and threatening behavior, further illustrating his troubled history and ongoing issues with the law.
