MAN WHO KILLED HIS STEPFATHER AND FAMILY DOG JAILED FOR LIFE
A man responsible for the murder of his stepfather and the family’s pet dog has received a life sentence.Emergency services arrived at a residence on Valley Road in Shirebrook after receiving a call around 8:20 pm on Wednesday, October 22, 2025.
Authorities detained a 19-year-old suspect on charges of homicide.
The victim, 57-year-old Christopher Owen, was discovered at the scene with multiple stab wounds and was declared dead upon arrival.
Also deceased at the scene was a Jack Russell terrier that had also been stabbed.
The accused, Logan Procter, was charged with Owen’s murder and with causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal related to the dog’s death.
He was remanded into custody.
The charge concerning the dog was later incorporated into the murder charge.
Procter admitted guilt to the murder count during court proceedings and was sentenced at Derby Crown Court on April 17.
The court was told that the now 20-year-old had compiled several lists, including what the prosecution described as “kill lists,” with Mr Owen’s name at the top.
The list also included his mother and other family members.
It was revealed he had searched online for different murder methods and extreme sexual content.
The prosecution detailed that Mr Owen had endured over 70 stab and slash wounds, more than half localised around his head, neck, and face, inflicted while he was sleeping.
The fatal injuries involved stab wounds to his neck and chest that cut his internal jugular vein.
The force behind the stabbing was so intense that it chipped two vertebrae, and the initial kitchen knife bent, necessitating the use of a second, combat-style knife to continue the assault.
The attack lasted between five and seven minutes, with Mr Owen fighting back, as evidenced by defensive wounds on his arms and hands.
Despite multiple injuries, his death was not immediate—indicating he survived some time before succumbing.
The family dog, Poppy, was found alongside Mr Owen.
Procter recounted how she screamed loudly during the stabbing, which was carried out 15 times.
Following the attack, Procter undressed, threw his blood-stained clothes into a laundry basket, took a shower, and then called emergency services.
He admitted to police that he had killed both Mr Owen and Poppy, claiming he hoped the act would bring him thrill but that it did not meet his expectations.
During police interviews, Procter did not comment or provide reasons for his actions.
The court emphasised that Mr Owen was entirely innocent and deserved no harm.
In sentencing, Judge Shaun Smith highlighted the profound grief experienced by Owen’s family, comparing it to their loss of his sibling, Andrew, who was murdered in Dudley in 2007.
The victim’s mother described the devastating loss of her loved ones in her impact statement, revealing she had lost her partner and son.
After his detention, Procter was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, mood disorder, and borderline learning disability.
The judge sentenced Procter to life imprisonment, stipulating that he must serve a minimum of 20 years and 132 days before being eligible for parole.
