LISA DOOLAN FROM NEW FERRY SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN WIRRAL AND LIVERPOOL
In September 2017, a disturbing case emerged involving Lisa Doolan, a woman from New Ferry, who was convicted of aiding and abetting the sexual abuse of a young girl during the 1980s. The court heard that Doolan, who was in her teenage years at the time, played a significant role in facilitating the abuse carried out by elderly paedophiles in the Wirral area, including Liverpool.Lisa Doolan, now in her 40s and a mother of a 22-month-old child, was sentenced after a jury found her guilty of two counts of gross indecency with a child and one count of indecent assault on a child. The court was told that Doolan had coerced her young victim into visiting the homes of older men, where she was subjected to sexual abuse. Prosecutor Lee Bonner detailed the heinous acts, describing how Doolan would instruct the girl to lie down on a bed in one house, where an elderly man would then have sex with her. In another instance, Doolan helped position the girl onto a man sitting on a chair, facilitating his abuse.
Further, Doolan manipulated the girl into accompanying her to other locations where men would perform sexual acts in her presence. Although she did not physically assault the victim herself, she actively sought money from the abusers and even searched their homes for cash, motivated primarily by her ongoing drug addiction. Her addiction, which involved glue-sniffing, was reportedly fueled by a chaotic childhood and a history of criminal behavior, including a six-year prison sentence for burglary.
The court heard that Doolan’s actions were driven by a desire to fund her drug habit, which persisted over several decades. The impact on her victim has been profound and long-lasting. In a statement read to the court, the victim described the psychological scars left by these experiences, noting that they have severely affected her ability to trust others and form full romantic relationships. She explained that her trauma has led to a limited circle of friends and ongoing emotional difficulties, with memories of her abuse resurfacing whenever she encounters situations reminiscent of her past.
Judge Simon Medland, presiding over the case, acknowledged Doolan’s troubled youth and her own history of being a victim of sexual abuse. He remarked that it is common for victims of abuse to become perpetrators later in life, often as a misguided attempt to avoid becoming prey themselves. The judge expressed the view that Doolan’s involvement in the abuse was partly motivated by her need to obtain drugs without exposing herself to further sexual exploitation.
While recognizing her victimization, the judge emphasized that such offending often leaves a lasting mark on the perpetrator. Doolan’s criminal record is extensive, and her past includes various offenses, notably her previous six-year imprisonment for burglary. Despite her history, the court considered her vulnerable background when determining her sentence.
In sentencing, Judge Medland imposed a two-year prison term and ordered Doolan to register as a sex offender for ten years. He also noted that Doolan failed to appear for the verdict and was later arrested on a court warrant on September 20. The court’s decision reflects the serious nature of her crimes and the lasting harm inflicted on her young victim, as well as the complex circumstances surrounding her own history of abuse and criminality.
