MAN JAILED FOR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OFFENCES AGAINST HIS EX PARTNER
A man known for showering his partner with affection and gifts, including getting her name tattooed on his arm, later subjected her to violent abuse, leading to his imprisonment.Jason Murphy was sentenced to jail after assaulting his former girlfriend, Kelly (a pseudonym), at his residence in New Ferry on May 27 of this year.
Kelly has spoken publicly about her experience, explaining how his initial acts of love and attention turned into something frightening.
Domestic violence organisations describe love-bombing as an excessive display of affection, such as giving gifts, compliments, or attention, often used to manipulate or make the victim dependent.
Kelly, aged 25, first met Murphy through a relative in July 2020.
She recalls, "It was love-bombing right from the start.
He was very intense, even getting my full name tattooed on his wrist, which seemed odd to me." She added, “He kept buying me gifts, showered me with attention, but after six months he cheated on me, which was devastating.
We split, but he continued to harass me, insisting we could still work things out.” Kelly eventually agreed to reunite with Murphy in February of that year, only to discover he was unfaithful again.
The situation worsened when Kelly found out she was pregnant, and she chose to continue with the pregnancy.
The couple moved into a shared house, and she gave birth to her daughter in March.
Kelly later described the space as a mistake, citing Murphy's increasing violent behavior.
Kelly reports that Murphy became progressively abusive, including attempting to suffocate her by covering her mouth, though she did not report these incidents to police at the time.
After their latest breakup, Kelly moved out, leaving their baby in Murphy’s care initially.
When Kelly returned to the house on May 27 to visit her daughter and bring clothes, Murphy, who was intoxicated, became aggressive.
She recalls Murphy reacting angrily over her recently done nails, calling her derogatory names, and blaming her for the violence he inflicted.
He pushed her to the ground, stood over her, and verbally abused her.
During the attack, he damaged her glasses and smashed her TV, impairing her sight.
Kelly tried to see her daughter again but was physically restrained, with Murphy strangling her as he shouted.
The assault escalated when Murphy headbutted Kelly as she held their baby, leaving her distressed and tearful while she was feeding her.
During the confrontation, he also threw her mobile phone into the kitchen, damaging it, and took her bank card.
Murphy then forced Kelly to go to the bank to withdraw money for their child.
The next day, she reported the incident to Merseyside Police, leading to Murphy’s arrest.
He was released on bail and later received a non-molestation order, which he violated by sending her messages.
Ultimately, Murphy pleaded guilty to assault, criminal damage, and breaching the court order in Liverpool Magistrates' Court, receiving a 20-week jail sentence.
Kelly expressed concern about her future, feeling unsafe and unprotected.
She explained that Murphy often ignored police bail conditions and the court order, leaving her feeling vulnerable.
Reflecting on the night of the incident, she described feeling broken and helpless, noting that the repeated violence and destruction of her belongings had crushed her spirit, making her feel powerless to intervene or seek help.
