LIAM REILLY STRUCK OFF IN FIFE OVER CHILD PORNOGRAPHY CASE
In February 2021, a disturbing case emerged involving Liam Reilly, a children’s care worker based in Fife, who faced severe professional repercussions following his conviction related to child exploitation.Reilly, employed as a Residential Child Care Worker, was found guilty in October 2020 at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court of serious offences involving the creation and distribution of indecent images of minors.
The court’s verdict marked a significant legal judgment against him, highlighting the gravity of his actions.
Following his conviction, the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), the regulatory body responsible for overseeing social service professionals in Scotland, convened a disciplinary panel to review Reilly’s case.
The panel’s decision was unequivocal: they decided to remove him from the professional register, effectively ending his career in social care.
During the hearing, the panel addressed Reilly directly, emphasizing the severity of his misconduct.
They stated, “You have been convicted of serious offences in that you took, or permitted to be taken or made, an indecent photograph of a child.
You then distributed or showed the indecent photograph.” The panel further condemned his actions, asserting that such behaviour demonstrates a blatant disregard for both the law and the safety and welfare of vulnerable children.
They highlighted that his conduct is at the higher end of the seriousness spectrum and is fundamentally incompatible with maintaining a professional registration with the SSSC.
In their judgment, the panel warned that a recurrence of such behaviour could pose a real and significant risk of harm to children.
They also expressed concern about the impact of Reilly’s actions on public trust, noting that such misconduct could undermine confidence in registered social care workers.
The decision to strike him off the register underscores the importance placed on safeguarding children and maintaining high standards of professionalism within the social services sector in Fife and across Scotland.
