LEWIS SMITH FROM INVERKEILOR SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC CRIMES IN EDINBURGH AND ARBROATH

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Inverkeilor, Arbroath, and Montrose, Lewis Smith, a 27-year-old man from Inverkeilor, was sentenced to six years in prison following a series of heinous crimes that spanned several years. The offences, which included severe physical abuse and sexual assault, were brought to light during a trial held at the High Court in Edinburgh last month, where Smith was found guilty on multiple charges.

One of the most disturbing aspects of the case involved Smith subjecting a young girl, who was under the age of 13 at the time, to a series of brutal and degrading acts. According to court proceedings, Smith forced the girl to eat his faeces and subjected her to violent beatings, which included biting her nose and strangling her. The court heard that Smith also sexually abused her in a bath, further compounding the trauma inflicted upon the young victim.

During the sentencing hearing on Friday, Judge Lady Poole described the crimes as “nauseating” and emphasized that society would not tolerate such acts of abuse. She detailed the extent of Smith’s cruelty, noting that he forced the girl to open her mouth before spitting into it and making her swallow his saliva. The court also revealed that Smith spat in her hair, forced food into her mouth, and physically assaulted her by punching and pushing her. In a particularly vile act, he placed his faeces on her hand and compelled her to eat it, demonstrating a complete disregard for her well-being.

In addition to the abuse of the young girl, Smith was convicted of raping a woman who was intoxicated, asleep, and unable to give consent in June 2019. The court heard that Smith attacked her a second time while she was pretending to sleep, then removed her lower clothing and sexually assaulted her on a third occasion. The jury found him guilty of engaging in a course of conduct that was likely to cause the woman, whose identity is protected for legal reasons, to fear or be alarmed. Smith’s violent behavior extended beyond sexual assault, as he also shouted, swore, made derogatory remarks about her appearance, threatened her with violence, and denied her access to money.

There was also an incident where Smith grabbed the woman by her clothing and pushed her, causing injury. These offences took place across various addresses in the Arbroath and Montrose areas between June 2016 and October 2019. Despite denying his guilt throughout the proceedings, Smith had previously been placed on the sex offenders’ register, reflecting the severity of his criminal history.

Judge Lady Poole highlighted that Smith’s victims had suffered both physical and emotional harm. Pre-sentencing reports indicated that Smith poses a “high risk” of reoffending sexually. The judge emphasized that the sentence was designed to reflect the “sustained nature” of his offending and the significant danger he poses to the public upon his release, underscoring the seriousness of his crimes and the need for ongoing supervision and protection of potential future victims.
