LESLEY DAY EXTRADITED FROM CO KILKENNY TO ENGLAND FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE
In a significant development in the fight against historic child abuse, Leslie Day, aged 48, originally from Co Kilkenny, has been extradited from Ireland to England to face serious charges related to the sexual assault of a young girl in the 1990s. The offences took place in Cambridgeshire, England, and involved multiple counts of sexual misconduct against a minor.Day was apprehended at his residence in Paulstown, a village in County Kilkenny, after a lengthy investigation. His arrest followed the victim, who had kept her traumatic experience to herself for many years, choosing to confide in a friend last year. This disclosure prompted her to report the abuse to the police, setting in motion the legal proceedings that would eventually lead to Day’s extradition.
Following his arrest in February, Leslie Day was brought before the courts in England, where he pleaded guilty to a series of serious charges. These included rape, attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault, and gross indecency with a child. The case was heard at Cambridge Crown Court, where the court proceedings revealed the extent of the abuse inflicted upon the young girl during the 1990s.
Judge Anthony Bate sentenced Day to a total of eight years in prison for his crimes. The judge also recommended that, upon completion of his sentence, Day be deported back to Ireland, specifically to his hometown of Co Kilkenny. This decision underscores the seriousness with which the court viewed the offences and the importance of ensuring justice for victims of such heinous acts.
Detective Constable Natalie Bottom, who was involved in the investigation, expressed her commendation for the victim’s bravery. “The victim showed great bravery in coming forward after such a long time in order to bring her abuser to justice,” she stated. She emphasized that this case demonstrates that even decades after the crimes were committed, law enforcement agencies remain capable of pursuing and prosecuting offenders.
“People who have committed historic offences should be warned that they face a knock on the door from police,” she added, highlighting the ongoing efforts of authorities to bring justice to victims of past crimes and to hold offenders accountable regardless of the passage of time.
