In June 2022, a disturbing case emerged involving Leslie Burton, a 44-year-old plumber from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, who has been accused of installing covert surveillance devices in women’s bedrooms to secretly record intimate moments.Burton, who was performing routine maintenance on gas boilers at various homes, exploited his position of trust to carry out these invasive acts.
His criminal activities came to light when he was caught on a CCTV camera set up by homeowners in Sheffield.
The footage revealed Burton rummaging through a bedside cabinet, discovering a sex toy, and then engaging in self-pleasure during a service call at the residence.
This incident marked a significant breakthrough in the investigation, as the homeowners had installed the nanny cam to monitor their young children after bedtime, not expecting to capture such disturbing behavior.
Following the discovery, police swiftly arrested Burton.
During the investigation, authorities uncovered a disturbing collection of footage stored on his computer, which included various recordings that raised serious concerns about his conduct.
Prosecutor Rob Coyne described the material as containing a “plethora” of worrying content, highlighting the extent of Burton’s voyeuristic activities.
In the aftermath of his arrest, Burton resigned from his plumbing company and also stepped down from his role as a Scout leader, reflecting the gravity of his actions and the damage to his reputation.
During his appearance at Sheffield magistrates’ court, Burton admitted to charges of burglary, voyeurism, and possession of extreme pornography.
The court proceedings revealed the seriousness of his offenses and the breach of trust involved.
Given the severity of the crimes, the magistrates decided to refer Burton’s case to the crown court for sentencing.
They determined that the maximum jail term they could impose—12 months—was insufficient to serve justice, indicating the need for a more substantial penalty.
The case remains ongoing as authorities seek an appropriate sentence for Burton’s disturbing violations.
