LEONARD WEEKS FROM SALTASH SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN TRURO

In a case that has sparked significant public concern and media attention, Leonard Weeks, a 53-year-old chef residing in Saltash, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 15 years for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against two young children. The crimes, which involved both rape and indecent assault, targeted a boy and a girl, both of whom are now teenagers, and have left a lasting impact on their lives.

Weeks' trial at Truro Crown Court concluded after a four-day hearing, during which the jury found him guilty of 12 separate counts related to the abuse. These counts included serious charges of rape and indecent assault. However, the court acquitted him of one additional rape charge and a sexual assault charge involving a child under 13, based on the judge's direction.

The case drew controversy weeks prior to the sentencing when Judge Christopher Elwen expressed concern over the delays in bringing Weeks to trial. He threatened to release Weeks on conditional bail due to a backlog in the court system, which was caused by a lack of funding. The judge pointed out that Weeks' custody time limit was set to expire on March 31, yet his trial was scheduled for August 10, raising questions about the efficiency of the judicial process.

Judge Elwen criticized the government for the delays, describing the situation as unacceptable. He indicated that if the trial did not proceed within the legal time limits, he would have to release Weeks from custody until the case could be heard. Following media inquiries and pressure from the courts, the trial date was moved forward to March 16, well within the custody time limit, ensuring that Weeks remained in custody until the trial.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Paul Darlow emphasized that Weeks deserved no leniency, criticizing his decision to plead not guilty. This stance forced the young victims to endure the trauma of waiting and testifying in court. The court also ordered Weeks to be registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, a measure aimed at monitoring his activities and preventing further harm.

This case underscores ongoing concerns about the protection of children and the importance of swift judicial action in cases of sexual abuse. The community in Saltash and beyond continues to grapple with the aftermath of these disturbing crimes, and the legal proceedings serve as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and justice.
