LEE TANDY SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL CHILD CRUELTY IN WORTHING

In May 2013, Lee Tandy, a 35-year-old resident of Worthing, was convicted of inflicting severe injuries on a three-month-old baby, leading to a lengthy prison sentence. The case drew significant attention due to the brutality of the injuries and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Lee Tandy, who was employed in the financial services sector and lived on Mardale Road in Worthing, faced charges of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) and child cruelty. The charges stemmed from incidents that occurred in April and May of 2011, when the young child was subjected to injuries that would have a lasting impact.

The court proceedings culminated in a four-day trial held at Chichester Crown Court in April. The jury, after careful deliberation, found Tandy guilty of all three charges brought against him. The evidence presented during the trial revealed that the baby was admitted to the hospital on May 29, 2011, with critical injuries, including bleeding on the brain, bruising on the legs, and a fractured rib. It was also disclosed that the child had been hospitalized twice prior to this incident, with medical assessments confirming that the injuries were non-accidental and inflicted intentionally.

Despite the severity of the injuries, the baby survived the ordeal, although the recovery process was lengthy and challenging. The case highlighted the disturbing reality of child abuse and the importance of vigilant investigation and prosecution to protect vulnerable children.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Keith Fifield commented on the case, stating, “This was a good result after what has been a long and complex investigation. Tandy inflicted grievous injuries on the baby, who was just a few months old at the time.”

Detective Sergeant Dave Hirst, a member of the Child Protection Team, also expressed his thoughts, saying, “It is just under two years since the actual incident and within that time, DC Keith Fifield and his colleagues conducted a thorough and complex investigation culminating in an excellent result today. As always, I am in complete awe at the work detectives carry out in the Child Protection Team, which seeks to prosecute and safeguard children, the most vulnerable element of our society which in many cases, including this, has no voice.”

Lee Tandy was subsequently sentenced to five and a half years in prison for his actions, marking a significant step in the justice system’s efforts to combat child abuse and protect innocent lives in Worthing and beyond.
