LEE JAMES MULLEN'S HORRIFIC CRIME IN FLINT AND DENBIGHSHIRE: LIFE SENTENCE FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND GBH

Lee James Mullen, aged 38 and residing on Church Street in Flint, was found guilty of a heinous sexual assault by penetration and the infliction of grievous bodily harm. The incident occurred on December 10, 2024, at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, a hospital located in Bodelwyddan, Denbighshire. According to court reports, Mullen followed his victim into a toilet within the hospital premises, where he launched a sustained and brutal attack.

During the assault, Mullen held his hand over the victim’s mouth, threatening her with death if she dared to report the incident. The severity of his actions was compounded by his previous criminal history; in 2015, he had been sentenced to 11 years in prison after gagging and raping a woman. This history underscored the dangerous pattern of his behavior and the ongoing threat he posed to the community.

At Mold Crown Court, the sentencing hearing revealed the full extent of the trauma inflicted upon the victim. Mullen was handed a life sentence with a minimum term of seven years before he could be considered for parole. Additionally, the court imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a Restraining Order to prevent any contact with the victim or others. Mullen was also ordered to be registered as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.

During the proceedings, the victim bravely read a statement detailing the harrowing experience. She described how, even when she was trapped on the floor, playing dead in an attempt to survive, Mullen continued his assault by punching her twice and penetrating her again. Her words conveyed the profound impact of the attack: “On the night of the attack, even when I lay on the floor trapped, having taken a deep breath and played dead, you still punched me twice and assaulted me by penetration…

“I believed I was going to die that night in the toilets of a hospital, a place that’s meant to be for health, love, safety and trust…

“My greatest wish is that you never, ever do this to anyone again, putting them through the trauma of what I went through that night, and I continue to go through to this day.

“I promise you now, I will rise like a phoenix from the ashes.”

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Ashley Davies commented on the case, emphasizing the shock and brutality of the attack. He stated, “This was a shocking and unprovoked attack which has changed the life of an innocent person and their family.

“Having made off from the hospital, Mullen discarded his clothing before entering a local coffee shop to evade capture. I would like to commend my colleagues for swiftly locating and detaining Mullen before any further offences could be committed.”
