LAUREN ELIOT FROM STANLEY FACES FIVE-YEAR BAN AFTER CRUELTY TO BRITISH BULLDOG ROYSTON

Lauren Jane Eliot, born on February 8, 1997, and residing at 5 Thomas Street, Annfield Plain, Stanley, Co Durham DH9 7SN, has been found guilty of neglecting her pet dog, leading to serious concerns about animal welfare. The case centers around her treatment of an 18-month-old British bulldog named Royston, who was rescued from a deplorable living environment that posed significant health and safety hazards.

Royston was discovered in a yard cluttered with rubbish, including a mouldy sofa that served as his only shelter. The dog was severely underweight, with visible skin and ear conditions, and his nails were notably long, indicating neglect. The yard was filled with feces and other hazards, creating an unsafe environment for the animal. The situation had deteriorated over time, despite previous advice from RSPCA inspector Cathy Maddison, who had visited the property in April and again in August.

During her initial visit, inspector Maddison advised the residents—who included Eliot and her partner, David Anthony Barker—that they needed to clean the yard and seek veterinary care for Royston. However, when she returned in August, the conditions had worsened considerably. Royston was found lying on a mouldy sofa amidst the hazards, with no proper shelter. The yard was filthy, and the shed that Royston used for shelter had been filled with chairs, leaving him with only the wet sofa to rest on.

Inspector Maddison recounted that Eliot had claimed she was taking Royston to the vet, but when she returned, neither the vet visits nor the yard cleanup had been carried out. The dog's health was visibly poor; his skin was raw and inflamed, his ears were dirty, and he emitted a foul smell. Recognizing the severity of the neglect, the inspector advised that Royston be taken to the vet for a thorough examination. Following veterinary assessment, it was confirmed that Royston was underweight and suffering from skin issues and poor hygiene.

On veterinary advice, Royston was taken into police custody and placed in the care of the RSPCA while investigations continued. It was revealed that Eliot had been left with the dog after breaking up with her partner and was unable to provide proper care. The authorities emphasized that Royston had now recovered fully and was in good health, thanks to the intervention.

In court, Eliot was convicted in her absence of failing to ensure her dog’s needs for a suitable environment and neglecting to seek veterinary treatment. She was subsequently banned from owning animals for five years, a restriction that will last until March 2025. Additionally, she was ordered to pay a fine of £400. The RSPCA inspector expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating, “Royston is now fully recovered and doing great. He’s a fantastic dog, and I’m really happy that we’ll now be able to find a fantastic new forever home for him.”
