LAURA KISELIOVA AND RAIMONDAS TITAS: HORRIFIC ANIMAL TRAFFICKERS FROM LITTLE HULTON FLEE TO LITHUANIA

In a disturbing case that has shocked animal welfare advocates and law enforcement alike, Lithuanian nationals Laura Kiseliova and Raimondas Titas, formerly residing in Little Hulton, Manchester, have been implicated in a large-scale illegal animal trafficking operation. The pair, who previously lived on Ladywell Avenue, M38, Manchester, are believed to have fled the United Kingdom and returned to their native Lithuania to evade justice after being convicted in 2018.

These individuals were found to have been involved in the cruel and illegal importation, breeding, and sale of sick and neglected dogs and cats. Their operation involved keeping animals in deplorable conditions, with many confined in cramped, filthy cages that lacked proper sanitation or veterinary care. The animals, which included popular breeds such as French bulldogs, pugs, and pedigree cats like Persians and Sphynxes, were sold for prices ranging from £800 to £1,000 each. The operation was conducted through an online platform called Pets313, which the pair used to promote and sell these animals, falsely claiming they were British-bred.

Investigations into their activities began after authorities intercepted their attempts to import dogs at ports in Kent on two separate occasions. Additionally, a local veterinarian raised concerns about a puppy sold within Manchester that was microchipped with an Eastern European identifier, raising suspicions about the origin of the animals. It was discovered that many of these animals had not received the necessary veterinary attention and were suffering from conditions such as conjunctivitis, gastroenteritis, or infected wounds. The distressing conditions of the animals were evident, with many kept in small cages or crates, often in garages or bathrooms, with no proper isolation or disease control measures in place.

Further evidence uncovered during the investigation revealed that the pair had trafficked numerous dogs under the pet passport scheme, falsely claiming they were bred in the UK. Over 40 pet passports were found at their previous residence, which did not match the animals present, indicating a deliberate attempt to disguise the true origin of the trafficked animals. The authorities seized 41 dogs, including French bulldogs, pugs, and English bulldogs, along with eight pedigree cats, during a raid at their Prestwich home in November 2013. The animals were in poor health, many suffering from infections and other ailments, and were being sold to unsuspecting members of the public.

Both Kiseliova and Titas faced multiple charges, including animal cruelty, failing to provide proper care, and operating an illegal puppy farm. They pleaded guilty to 29 charges in total. Despite their guilty pleas, they fled the UK before sentencing, which took place at Manchester Crown Court on December 13, 2018. In their absence, they were sentenced to four years in prison for Kiseliova and three years and six months for Titas. Both were also banned from keeping pets for life.

In a significant development in August 2019, Laura Kiseliova was finally apprehended after surrendering herself to Spanish police in Barcelona. A European Arrest Warrant was executed to bring her back to the UK for sentencing. However, Raimondas Titas remains at large, still on the run from authorities. Kiseliova’s legal team claimed she turned herself in because her child, now two years old, was old enough for her to be cared for by her adult children. Nonetheless, Judge Richard Mansell QC dismissed her claims, describing her as a “fraudster and a liar,” and criticized her for deliberately leaving the country to evade justice. The judge emphasized that her actions had caused significant delays, additional costs, and distress to victims and authorities alike.

During her detention in Spain, Kiseliova reportedly spent a month in jail, which she described as a “salutary and intimidating experience.” She was found to possess no cash or bank cards and an ID document under a different name. Her attempt to justify her actions with claims about her child’s welfare was dismissed by the judge, who pointed out the lack of supporting documentation such as a birth certificate or photographs. The court’s verdict underscored her pattern of deception and her role in a large-scale animal cruelty and trafficking operation that caused immense suffering to countless animals and betrayed the trust of innocent buyers.
