KYLER RATTRAY CHARGED WITH MURDERING DOCTOR IN DUNDEE STREET

A 20-year-old man named Kyler Kenneth Rattray of St Clements Place, Dundee has been charged with the murder of Dr.

Fortune Gomo on Dundee's South Road.

The incident occurred on Saturday afternoon around 4.25pm when Dr.

Gomo, a 39-year-old respected environmental scientist and recent Scottish Water recruit, was found seriously injured at the scene.

Despite paramedic efforts, she was pronounced dead there.

Rattray made a court appearance on Monday at Dundee Sheriff Court, where he faced a charge of murder.

WHAT WENT WRONG?

THE DEATH OF DR FORTUNE GOMO SPARKS MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS QUESTIONS FOR DUNDEE CITY COUNCIL.

A respected academic, mother, and community member is dead – and the public is demanding answers.

Dr Fortune Gomo, 39, was fatally stabbed on South Road, Dundee, on Saturday 5th July 2025, in front of her 10-year-old child.

The suspect, 20-year-old Kyler Rattray, had a well-documented history of severe mental illness and violence.

He had only recently been released from a secure mental health facility.

Now, the city of Dundee is not only mourning the loss of a brilliant woman, but also demanding answers.

Why was someone with a known record of psychosis and violence released into the community?

Why were warnings ignored?

And why did the incident receive so little attention until the public raised the alarm?

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR At approximately 4:25 PM on Saturday 5th July, emergency services responded to a 999 call reporting a serious assault on South Road, Dundee.

Dr Fortune Gomo had been attacked in broad daylight, with her child present during the incident.

Despite immediate medical attention from paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The initial emergency response involved five police vehicles, paramedics, and community wardens.

News of the incident spread quickly among local residents, many of whom gathered at the scene by early evening.

Their concerns went beyond the horror of the crime itself.

Many questioned why such a brutal attack received no official police statement for several hours, and why no media outlet had reported it.

It wasn’t until 11:19 PM that Police Scotland issued a brief public statement.

They confirmed that a 20-year-old man had been arrested after reports that a woman in her 30s had been seriously injured.

The statement offered little detail, adding only that the incident had been “contained” and posed “no wider risk to the public.” By this point, public frustration was growing.

Over the next 24 hours, the silence from mainstream media outlets was deafening.

While friends and family of Dr Gomo were already posting tributes and seeking justice online, official news reports remained minimal.

On Sunday afternoon, the University of Dundee confirmed her death via internal email, acknowledging the loss of a former student and postdoctoral research assistant.

Only by Sunday evening did national media begin to report the story, offering limited detail and downplaying the brutality of the incident.

On Monday 7th July, 20-year-old Kyler Kenneth Rattray appeared in court and gave no plea.

His name was released by Police Scotland that same day.

Using the power of social media, Red Rose UK and members of the public were able to identify a photo and confirm his last known location within hours.

It was at this point that more disturbing information began to surface.

WHO WAS DR FORTUNE GOMO?

Dr Gomo was a highly respected woman who had dedicated her life to research, education, and public service.

Originally from Zimbabwe, she moved to the UK to study and eventually earned her PhD in Geography from the University of Dundee.

She later worked as a postdoctoral research assistant at the university until 2022.

More recently, she had joined Scottish Water as a senior service planner, where colleagues said she was thriving in her role.

Friends, family, and former classmates described her as a deeply intelligent, emotionally grounded, and compassionate person.

One tribute described her as “the kind of person you’d go to for clarity – not just of mind, but of heart.” Her sudden death has left both the local and academic communities devastated, especially those within Dundee’s African student and alumni networks.

Dr Gomo was a mother, a professional, and a role model — and her life was stolen in seconds.

WHO IS KYLER RATTRAY?

Kyler Rattray is a 20-year-old man from Dundee with a long-standing history of mental illness.

According to a video released by his father — which has since gone viral with over 600,000 views — Kyler was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2016 following a series of violent psychotic episodes.

His father revealed that Kyler had spent the majority of his late teens in and out of secure mental health wards, often following outbursts of extreme aggression.

In 2024, Kyler allegedly attempted to murder his brother.

This led to police and social services placing a restriction order on him, banning him from returning to the family home.

Despite his violent history and clear mental instability, Kyler was reportedly released from a secure mental health facility in April 2025 — just months before the fatal stabbing.

His release was allegedly pushed through by his psychiatrist, overruling concerns from both social services and his own parents, who had fought desperately to keep him detained.

His family claims the system failed them — and more importantly, failed the public.

The video released by Kyler’s father contains heart-wrenching testimony about their unsuccessful attempts to get long-term help, with chilling warnings that went unheeded.

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER This incident raises urgent and uncomfortable questions about mental health governance, public safety, and systemic negligence.

Why was a young man, known for violent psychotic episodes and recent attempted fratricide, deemed safe for release?

Who authorised his discharge, and what oversight — if any — was implemented to ensure the public’s safety?

The case also reopens questions about race and media accountability.

Would the media silence have been the same had the victim not been a Black woman?

Would police have communicated sooner and more transparently?

These questions are now at the centre of public discourse in Dundee and beyond.

The death of Dr Fortune Gomo is not being seen as an isolated tragedy, but rather a consequence of broader systemic failure.

The mental health system, social services, and law enforcement are all now under scrutiny.

An independent review has been called for by multiple community leaders and campaigners who argue that this incident was entirely preventable.

Meanwhile, public trust continues to erode as more people come forward with stories of ignored mental health warnings, mismanaged care, and families left powerless by bureaucracy.

Dr Gomo’s life was not only valuable — it was full of promise.

Her death has left a hole in the heart of her community, and her story is now a rallying cry for justice, accountability, and reform.

Those who failed to act must be held to account.

Because this was not just a tragedy — it was a failure.

And failures demand answers.
