OFFENDER KYLE MITCHELL IN COURT OVER CHILD ABDUCTION AND VIOLENT STANDOFF
A man grabbed hold of a young child during a dramatic standoff with armed police at a house in Moldgreen early on Sunday morning.Kyle Mitchell threw weapons out of the window, hitting cars and property during the incident at a house in Rosedale Avenue.
At one point he held a two-year-old child in his arms as armed police and negotiators surrounded him.
The 24-year-old pleaded guilty to charges of threatening unlawful violence and assaulting a police officer when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court today.
Tattooed Mitchell appeared in custody following his arrest over the incident, which happened at 6.35am on Sunday.
Police descended on the property after a row between Mitchell and his on-off girlfriend escalated and he locked her out.
Firearms officers and negotiators swooped on the house aided by the West Yorkshire Police helicopter.
The street was sealed off for over two hours during the drama.
The two-year-old witnessed part of the incident, during which Mitchell spat at one of the officers.
Carl Kingsley, mitigating, explained that at no point was the child in any danger.
He said: “He (Mitchell) attends at his on-off girlfriend’s house and is in drink.
She trawls through his mobile and takes umbrage at messages he’s been sending to another girl indicating that he’s single.
“She’s upset about that and tells him during a heated argument that her five-week old isn’t his.
Then she leaves the house and he locks the door behind her.” Deputy District Judge John Maxwell told Mitchell, of Brook Street in Moldgreen, that he will be sent to Leeds Crown Court for sentencing.
The bricklayer was told that this will take place on October 5.
