KRISTOFER MAWHINNEY'S HORRIFIC DOMESTIC ABUSE IN BLYTH LEADS TO PRISON SENTENCE

A man from Blyth, identified as Kristofer Mawhinney, has been sentenced to three years and four months in prison after a series of disturbing domestic abuse incidents that left his partner emotionally and physically scarred. The court heard that Mawhinney, aged 32, engaged in a prolonged period of both verbal and physical violence against his partner, exerting controlling behavior that escalated over time.

According to court records, Mawhinney's abusive actions included assault, strangulation, and intimidation, which created a climate of fear and submission. The victim, who was in a relationship with Mawhinney for approximately three years until their breakup in July 2024, recounted how she was forced to lie about her injuries to conceal the extent of the abuse. She explained that she was terrified of him and had become a shadow of her former self due to the relentless control and violence.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Mawhinney’s behavior worsened as the relationship progressed, marked by increasing jealousy, threats, and violent episodes. One particularly alarming incident involved Mawhinney strangling her in a hotel room, an act that exemplified the dangerous nature of his conduct. Despite their breakup, Mawhinney continued to harass her through persistent messages and phone calls, refusing to accept the end of their relationship.

On July 7, Mawhinney assaulted his partner at his residence in Blyth. The attack involved grabbing her hair, hitting her, and causing damage to the property, including a hole in a wall. The assault resulted in her sustaining a black eye and a swollen eyelid. The day following the attack, Mawhinney expressed remorse but also exerted further pressure on her to stay at his house, fearing her family might discover her injuries. He also instructed her to wear makeup to hide the bruises, a disturbing attempt to conceal the violence.

When she eventually sought medical attention, Mawhinney accompanied her to the hospital and appeared concerned about her disclosures to medical staff, indicating his awareness of the severity of his actions. The victim reported the incident to police on July 10, after which Mawhinney launched a campaign of harassment, making 64 phone calls and sending numerous texts, dismissing her accusations as “madness” and threatening legal action over what he called her “little lies.”

Initially, Mawhinney pleaded not guilty to the charges but later admitted to harassment, which resulted in a 12-week jail sentence. During sentencing, Recorder Jonathan Sandiford KC described Mawhinney’s conduct as a textbook example of domestic abuse, beginning with “love bombing” and spiraling into a “toxic cycle” that drained the victim’s vitality, leaving her as a “walking shadow of herself.” The court also issued a restraining order, prohibiting Mawhinney from contacting her for a period of nine years, emphasizing the seriousness of his actions and the ongoing threat he posed to her safety.
