KIERAN MALACHY HOSTY SENTENCED IN ANSTRUTHER FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE

A man named Kieran Malachy Hosty, who was involved in youth development initiatives and had connections with a university and the probation service, was sentenced to 30 months in prison yesterday after being convicted of sexually abusing two young girls.

Hosty, aged 72 and originally from New Brancepeth, Durham, had previously worked at Durham University Law School and was known for his involvement with a youth development trust.

His criminal actions came to light during a trial at Dundee Sheriff Court, where a jury found him guilty of child sex abuse.

The court heard that Hosty targeted the girls repeatedly over a period of years.

His family would travel to Fife for holidays, during which he would abuse the girls annually.

The abuse was carried out when he and his wife visited the East Neuk area, a region in Fife known for its scenic coastal villages, including Anstruther.

Sheriff Alastair Carmichael addressed Hosty directly, stating, “These women still carry the scarring from your sexual abuse.

There is no alternative to a custodial sentence.” The judge’s words underscored the severity of the crimes and the lasting impact on the victims.

The jury was informed that the abuse continued each year until one of the girls finally found the courage to confide in her mother, revealing the long-standing trauma inflicted by Hosty.

As part of his sentence, Hosty was also ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and preventing further harm.

The case highlights the importance of vigilance and the devastating effects of child abuse, even when perpetrated by individuals in positions of trust and authority.
