KEVIN HOLLAND FROM HEWORTH, YORK, SENTENCED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENSES

In August 2003, a man from York, identified as Kevin Holland, faced serious allegations related to the possession and creation of indecent images of children. The court proceedings revealed that Holland, aged 44 and residing on Hempland Drive in Heworth, had accumulated a disturbing collection of digital material on his personal computer. Specifically, authorities discovered a total of 175 indecent images depicting children within his files, a revelation that has shocked the local community and highlighted the ongoing battle against child exploitation.

Holland appeared before York Magistrates Court to answer charges that included nine counts of creating indecent images of children and one count of possessing such images. The court was informed that his arrest in November of the previous year was part of an extensive international operation targeting child pornography networks. Following his apprehension, Holland reportedly experienced a severe emotional crisis, with court records indicating he became suicidal. His solicitor, Colin Byrne, described his client’s mental state, stating, “He went to the cliff edge, and looked down the face, before deciding not to jump.”

Colin Byrne further explained that Holland suffers from a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder, which compelled him to seek out pornographic images of young women aged between 16 and 19. Since his arrest, Holland had sought medical treatment for his condition and had been under the care of a psychotherapist since earlier this year. The solicitor clarified that the images of children were not initially the primary target of Holland’s searches; rather, they appeared as a disturbing by-product of his obsessive quest for legal-age pornography. The police investigation uncovered that most of the indecent images of children—166 out of the 175—had been downloaded from the internet, with the remaining nine images created by Holland himself.

The images found on Holland’s computer were mostly of a mild nature, according to an official five-point scale used to measure obscenity levels. The majority of the images were classified as level one, indicating minimal severity, but some images were graded higher, reaching levels two, three, and four. Prosecutor David Garnett stated that Holland had subscribed to a website hosting numerous indecent images of young people, which facilitated his collection. He confirmed that Holland admitted to creating nine images, one of which was rated at level two in terms of obscenity.

During the sentencing, magistrates emphasized that if Holland refrained from further offending within the two-year period of his conditional discharge, the matter would be considered resolved. As part of his sentence, Holland was ordered to pay costs amounting to £120. Additionally, he was required to forfeit his computer’s hard drive, along with all disks and storage devices containing the indecent images of children. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which such offenses are treated, and the measures taken to prevent further harm.
