KERRY BIRMINGHAM FROM RICHMOND CONVICTED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG SASHA

A woman named Kerry Birmingham has been found guilty of subjecting her dog, a four-year-old Rottweiler named Sasha, to severe abuse. The disturbing acts of cruelty were captured through CCTV footage and mobile phone recordings, revealing Birmingham kicking and punching her dog during three separate incidents. Two of these incidents occurred inside a pub located in Richmond, while the third took place at a different venue within the same town.

Despite Sasha not suffering any visible physical injuries, a veterinarian involved in the case explained that her body language indicated she had endured significant pain and fear as a result of the physical assaults. The evidence collected prompted the RSPCA to launch an investigation, which culminated in the successful seizure of Sasha on August 23, 2023.

At the time of her court appearance, Kerry Birmingham, aged 58 and residing at Coronation Place in Richmond, admitted to four charges under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. She appeared before Peterlee Magistrates' Court, where she pleaded guilty to all charges. The court handed down a sentence that included a ten-year ban on keeping any animals, a fine of £200, costs amounting to £1,080, and a victim surcharge of £80. Following her conviction, Sasha was rehomed by the RSPCA to ensure her safety and well-being.

Inspector Clare Wilson, who was involved in the case, described the abuse as "sickening" and emphasized the importance of public vigilance. She urged anyone who witnesses animal cruelty to come forward and report such incidents immediately, to prevent further suffering and to uphold animal welfare standards in the community.
