KERRY-ANN FRETWELL-CHALLENGER'S HORRIFIC ANIMAL NEGLECT IN CANTLEY REVEALED

Kerry-ann Fretwell-Challenger, also known as Kerryann O’Malley, born on November 15, 1979, and residing at Brantwood Crescent in Cantley, Doncaster DN4 6LR, has been convicted of severe neglect towards her pet dogs. The case, which drew the attention of the RSPCA and local authorities, highlights the tragic consequences of neglecting animal welfare.

On May 21, 2021, Inspector Sarah Jordan responded to a distress call at Fretwell-Challenger’s address. The call was made by her, claiming to have found an injured dog behind some shops, which she then brought to the inspector’s attention. The dog, later identified as Sasha, was in a dire state, unable to support her weight on her left foreleg due to a deep, infected wound. The injury was so severe that the bone was exposed, and the swelling indicated it had been untreated for at least three to five days.

During her investigation, Inspector Jordan expressed suspicions that the dog belonged to Fretwell-Challenger. She noted that a review of social media profiles revealed numerous photographs of Sasha on Fretwell-Challenger’s Facebook page spanning several years. When questioned about these images on June 10 of the previous year, Fretwell-Challenger denied any connection, despite the evidence.

Further investigations uncovered additional disturbing details. The RSPCA received a tip-off indicating that another dog, Roxy, was also suffering from neglect at the same address. Accompanied by police officers, Inspector Jordan seized Roxy, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, who was found in a severely compromised state. Roxy was suffering from extensive skin disease, characterized by significant hair loss, crusting, scabbing, and signs of self-mutilation. The condition caused her considerable discomfort and mental distress, with the vet report confirming that her suffering had persisted for several weeks.

The veterinary assessment revealed that Roxy’s skin condition was so severe that she was in pain and constantly itchy, with the damage to her lower back and tail being particularly evident. The report emphasized that her untreated condition was a clear case of unnecessary suffering caused by her owner’s neglect.

Regarding Sasha, the vet’s report detailed a large open wound on her left forelimb, with puncture marks consistent with a dog bite. The injury was swollen, and she was unable to stand or walk. The veterinarian concluded that the injury was at least three to five days old, indicating a lack of veterinary intervention during that critical period.

Both dogs were subsequently signed over to the care of the RSPCA in August of the previous year. Since then, they have been rehabilitated and re-homed, offering them a chance at a healthier and happier life.

In court, the veterinary reports underscored the extent of the suffering inflicted upon the animals. The judge sentenced Fretwell-Challenger to 12 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, along with 80 hours of unpaid community service. She was also ordered to pay £478 in costs and charges. Additionally, she received a five-year ban on keeping animals, which will remain in effect until March 2026.

Inspector Jordan expressed her disappointment over the case, stating, “This was a sad case that could have so easily been avoided if the owner had sought veterinary treatment for her two dogs.” The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the devastating consequences of neglect.
