KENNETH NEWMAN SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN COLCHESTER

In a case that has shocked the community of Colchester, a man named Kenneth Newman has been sentenced to prison for a series of disturbing indecent assaults on young girls. The incident came to light during a court hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court, where Newman, aged 54, faced charges related to his inappropriate conduct involving minors.

According to court records, Newman was entrusted with the responsibility of babysitting two young girls, one aged six and the other ten. However, during this period, he committed indecent acts against both of these children on separate occasions. The court was also informed that Newman had assaulted two additional young girls, aged five and ten, prior to the allegations coming to public attention. The case was brought to light when one of the victims disclosed that Newman had touched her inappropriately, prompting an investigation.

Prosecutor David Holborn detailed the allegations during the hearing, explaining that Newman initially denied the claims made by the young girl. However, under police interrogation in Colchester, Newman eventually confessed to the offenses and admitted to the other incidents involving the two additional girls. The court heard that Newman had no fixed address at the time of his arrest and was charged with a total of five counts of indecent assault, committed between January of the previous year and May of this year.

In sentencing, Judge Brian Watling QC sentenced Newman to a total of 30 months in prison. The judge also ordered Newman to remain on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely, emphasizing the seriousness of his crimes and the potential risk to the community. During the proceedings, Grace Ong, representing Newman, expressed that her client was “deeply ashamed” of his actions and wished to offer an apology for the distress caused to his victims. She also highlighted that Newman’s guilty pleas had spared the victims the trauma of giving evidence in court, which was seen as a mitigating factor in his sentencing.
