KENNETH MUNDY'S SHOCKING CRIMES IN STOKE ST GREGORY AND RODBOURNE REVEAL DARK SECRETS

In August 2006, a disturbing case emerged involving Kenneth Mundy, a man with a troubling history of sexual offenses, who was living in Stoke St Gregory near Taunton at the time. The case drew significant attention after it was revealed that Mundy had been involved in deceitful activities aimed at grooming young children, despite being under strict legal restrictions due to his past crimes.

Kenneth Mundy, aged 51, had previously been convicted of indecently assaulting a three-year-old boy in 2003. Following that conviction, he was sentenced to a two-year probation order and was subject to a sexual offender’s prevention order, which prohibited him from initiating contact with children under the age of 16 without prior approval from social services. Despite these legal measures, Mundy continued to manipulate his identity and circumstances to gain access to environments where children were present.

The court heard that Mundy, who often told people his name was Kenneth Smith, used false identities and fabricated his background to integrate himself into community groups. Notably, he managed to secure a position on the committee of the Morris Street Working Men’s Club in Rodbourne, where he falsely claimed to have served in the Army and used the alias Kenneth Smith. His ability to deceive was uncovered during an incident at a local barbecue last summer, which ultimately led to his arrest and subsequent charges.

Prosecutor Richard Shepherd detailed how Mundy’s deception was exposed when he attended a social gathering at the barbecue, where he approached the woman hosting the event. During their conversation, Mundy asked if he could give her children £1.50 to buy sweets, and later inquired if he could do so regularly. The woman, who was unaware of Mundy’s true identity, agreed. However, her suspicions grew when she later found a wallet on the patio of the host’s house. Upon opening it, she discovered a yellow card indicating it was a sex offender’s registration card registered to Kenneth Mundy. She also found a photo ID card bearing the name Kenneth Mundy, along with other identification documents in the aliases Kenneth Smith and Mr. Smith.

Further investigation revealed that Mundy had been engaging in increasingly risky behavior. In the months leading up to the wallet discovery, he had befriended a woman who had a 15-year-old daughter. Under the terms of his sex offender’s registration, Mundy was required to inform authorities if he stayed at another address for more than seven days in a year. Yet, during a three-month period, he spent between 10 to 15 nights sleeping on the woman’s sofa, often in the company of her daughter, for whom he also bought cigarettes. These actions represented a clear breach of his legal obligations and raised serious concerns about his intentions and conduct.

Mundy, who resided at Stonefield Close, Eastleaze, was charged with failing to comply with the conditions of his sex offender’s register and breaching his sexual offender’s prevention order. His defense attorney, Mike Pulsford, argued that his client’s previous violations were primarily due to alcohol abuse, which led him to stay overnight at other people’s homes. Pulsford emphasized that Mundy was employed at an engineering firm and had joined the Morris Street Working Men’s Club under the false name to meet drinking companions. He insisted that Mundy’s actions at the barbecue were innocent, stating, “What he did was ask if he could buy any sweets for the children. That, he says, is because he likes children.”

Despite these arguments, Judge John McNaught sentenced Mundy to three years in prison. The judge expressed grave concerns about Mundy’s manipulative behavior, stating, “I share the view of the probation service that you were consciously grooming these children. This was wilful, highly deceitful and manipulative and raises concerns for children and vulnerable others. I think this case is a serious case.” He further condemned Mundy for assuming a false identity and gaining access to the social club, where he became a committee member.

Following the sentencing, a spokesperson from the Morris Street Working Men’s Club addressed the incident. The club members were reportedly shocked upon learning of Mundy’s actions. The spokesperson clarified that the barbecue where Mundy’s deception was uncovered was a private event at someone’s house, not an event organized by the club itself. He described Mundy as a quiet individual who often kept to himself, occasionally having a drink or orange squash, and noted that the club typically hosted children on Saturdays but had never observed any inappropriate behavior. The club members expressed their dismay at the revelations and the impact on their community’s reputation, emphasizing that they had no prior knowledge of Mundy’s true background and were taken aback by the police visit that followed.
