KENNETH ELRICK FROM CLEADON JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN NEWCASTLE
In September 2003, a disturbing case unfolded at Newcastle Crown Court involving Kenneth Elrick, a 39-year-old man from Cleadon, who was convicted of possessing and downloading explicit images of children. Elrick, a former CCTV operator for the local council, was found to have engaged in the illegal activity between May and December 2001, a period during which he accessed and stored numerous indecent materials on his home computer. His residence on East Boldon Road in Cleadon was raided by police in October of the previous year. During the search, authorities uncovered a collection of highly disturbing digital content, including an 18-minute video depicting the rape of a teenage girl. The police also discovered a total of 339 images, along with 92 floppy disks and 20 compact discs containing illicit material. The evidence pointed to a pattern of ongoing engagement with online communities that shared and exchanged child exploitation content, with Elrick reportedly communicating with other individuals involved in similar activities via email.
Prosecutor Caroline Goodwin detailed the severity of the case, emphasizing that the images and videos found were not only illegal but also deeply disturbing. She highlighted that one of the most shocking images showed a very young child wearing a dog collar and being subjected to abuse. The investigation revealed that Elrick was actively involved in accessing websites dedicated to exploiting children, which compounded the gravity of his offenses.
Elrick was arrested on October 7, alongside his wife; however, she was subsequently released without any charges being filed against her. The court heard that Elrick had maintained contact with other offenders through the internet, further implicating him in a broader network of child exploitation.
During the sentencing, Ian Graham, representing Elrick, attempted to mitigate the circumstances by stating that the couple had suffered greatly since the arrest and had endured the tragic loss of a child during the investigation. Nonetheless, Judge Beatrice Bolton delivered a stern verdict, condemning Elrick’s actions. She described the video found in his possession as 'appalling' and emphasized the disturbing nature of his interest in humiliating children.
Judge Bolton sentenced Elrick to 15 months in prison, with an extended license period of three years. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years. The judge’s remarks underscored the seriousness of the case, calling it the worst she had encountered in a decade, and highlighting the profound concern over Elrick’s apparent excitement derived from the humiliation and abuse of children.
