ABERDEEN MAN KEITH GRANT FOUND GUILTY OF SEXUAL ABUSE IN BUCHAN
An Aberdeen man named Keith Grant has been convicted after a four-day trial for his role in a series of sexual abuses involving a young girl across Buchan. The 44-year-old, who was on trial at Peterhead Sheriff Court, initiated his abusive actions when the girl was only seven years old, attacking her between 2014 and 2017. A second charge alleging sexual assault of another pre-teen girl was found not proven.The female victim, who cannot be named due to legal restrictions, provided evidence via video link against Grant. She described his abuse as happening so frequently that it became “normal” for her. As she fought back tears, she told the court, “I would just hear the door open. And then I would know. He never, ever said a word.” Over time, Grant would take her into a garage where the assaults continued.
When asked how many times the attacks occurred, the girl replied, “I can’t give you an exact number, but I know it happened enough for me to think it was normal. I didn’t know it was something I had to tell [my mum]. I was really young, and also very scared.”
She eventually disclosed the abuse after confiding in a school friend, who encouraged her to speak to a teacher in 2018. The girl still suffers from the effects of the abuse, describing her feelings as “Angry at myself.” She added, “I spent so long trying to forget all of this. I can’t sleep sometimes, I get nightmares.”
Grant, who was remanded in custody at HMP Grampian, denied the allegations entirely. He responded “no” to all suggestions of guilt from his defence solicitor, Eilish Lindsay, calling the accusations “sickening” and “wrong.” He was the sole witness for the defence.
On Thursday morning, the jury, after less than two hours of deliberation, returned a majority verdict of guilt. The jury had been urged to convict by Crown prosecutor Jennifer Pritchard, who stated, “His evidence was unreliable, uncredible, and should not cause you any doubts.”
Following the verdict, Sheriff Phillip Mann ordered Grant to be subject to sexual offences notification requirements and remanded him in custody to allow for the preparation of background reports. Grant is scheduled to return to court next month for sentencing.
